Cutting early to kill weeds?

I managed to get my hands on some free acreage (about 40) of hay that was last cut two seasons ago. A lot of weeds have come back since then. I was told I should cut the field down in early spring to kill the weeds with discbine or bushog, and by end of summer it will be better (not great, but better than it is now). Any other recommendations, or does this make sense?

Obviously I want to spend as little money on this since it's not my land and the crop will not be great. Thanks guys.

two best times to cut weeds to kill them is early spring so gass can grow and shade them out,and the hottest driest part of the year in your area, because they get stressed in the dry times just like your crops if you can cut the weeds during that time you'll kill more.of course if your cutting hay two or three times a year they will seem to naturally thin down.

if you cut it now al that you cut will rake up in the first cutting of hay. i'd hold out for a very early first cutting and then hope for a little rain and maybe at least one good cutting. anything you do right now wil just leave it on top and be baled up. if i had a source of manure i'd round bale it, turn the bales over on end and cover them with as manure as you can put on and around them. coering them with plastic helps but its hard to keep it on. stir it every 2 months and next year you can spread that on the field for fertilize or use it on your garden or sell it to others with gardens. makes the gardens so soft that you can't hardly walk in them and turn the soil a rich dark black. go around in the fall and get all the baged leaves you can find and dump them on your garden. either wet them real good or turn them under.

If it was let go to seed for a couple of years you will probably have trouble for many years to come. Might consider spraying for a couple years!
Good luck
