Neglected Brome

Hey all,

I bought this 40 acres in 2006 and it had a stand of brome on it that I have baled and used for hay in 2006, 07 and 08...........this had been neglected for 20 some years and not fertilized during that time. I have not fertilized it till this year and put 60 pounds N on it. Last summer after i cut it the goldenrod and other weeds came up thick in it. My question is can it be recovered with fertilizer and timly cuttings or should I just disk it all under and start over this fall by planting new?.........the brome is still pretty thick but without the fertilizer the last couple years and cutting it the weeds are taking over.........will they get crowded back out with proper care or will I have to spray?.......

It can vary a lot in different parts of the country but I have found that when the soil gets acidic goldenrod starts to come on strong, and adjusting pH back up puts the run to it. Have you tested your soil?

Thank you.......I have not tested (bad man).......did a walkabout today and looks like it is coming on strong......Going to cut when time and then after GRod ges a start I am going to spray vice killing it and starting over.....I hope to get a good crop off of it and I rad in an extention publication that you can fertilize right after cutting and if you get a good rain it should still come on strong againbefore the summer heat......don't know.........
