#1, I dont have a round bailer. #2, if I did, what would I cut it with, #3 How would I save the ears seperate from the stalks. I have a small goat herd, 3 hogs, and a couple dozen chickens, and around 80 rabbits, I would feed corn to to a varying degree

How were you gonna save the ears from the shredder?

Pick the corn. Rake the stalks. Run over with a rotary mower first if desired, at a high rate of ground speed. Then bale.

You had mentioned you were going to buy a couple implements & build a structure to store the stover?

You could just buy or rent the baler too instead of the other implements?

You harvest the corn.

You run a chopper (stalk chopper, rotory mower, some even do a haybine, some only just rake the field to gather the husks & leaves) and rake the stalks and bale them. It also works to square bale the stalks, but those _must_ be stored inside or will rot.

Same difference as to what you are planning, just a different set of tools. :)

You were going to harvest the corn before you picked up the stover too, same difference?

Just another option.

I assume he's going to save the ears because he wants to use a husker/shredder. Something like a Rosenthal. You'll be OK if you just blow those stalks into a pile or in a barn. If you don't feel comfortable with the pile outdoors, put a blue tarp over it or something. That structure that you talked about is doomed to fail though I'm afraid. Like I said before, don't overthink this.

Well, Im hopefully sure u know what a binder does, but it seems you dont all know what a husker shredder does. It is built somewhat like a thresher, and somewhat does the same thing. It husks the ear corn off of the stalk, and then shreds the stalk, and blows it into a pile, barn, or whatever. The ears are seperatly deposited into a wagon. I cant use a big bailer as I only have a 34 CC Case, a 48 Cub, a 48 H Farmall, and the use of a 49 WD AC tractors. None big enough to run a round bailer, NOW, To those who have stated driveing a brush hog quickly over it after picking, and then baleing it. Is this a thing you have seen done, or is this something that it seems to you should work?? I hope you mean in big bales, as ive heard many people who tried to bail corn stalks with a square bailer, which is what I have, and found it to be a big pain in the rear. Either the stalks fouled the wires or twine in knotting, or the bales fell apart when picked up. The latter is what ive found out be personal experience.

I know just what you mean. The neighbor had a binder and a Rosenthal husker. He blew his in a pile outside, his son had a larger barn and blew them up in there. That little 4 roll Rosenthal didn't have a conveyor on it though and they had to catch the ears in potato crates and carry it into the crib.
