septic tank sludge

Are there any draw backs to having this stuff sprayed on fields for fertilizer on corn and beans.

It is against the law here in Johnson County Iowa.

But some still do it.

Doesn't hurt a thing in my eyes.

Years ago all the farms septics dumped directly into the streams without dire problems. So why would it hurt to spread it on the soil where it would feed the crop.

if you are refering to the municipal sludge, i looked in to it a while ago. one of my shop customers has a trucking business that hauls the sludge. in illinois, you can only have 3 applications total on any piece of ground. yup its good fertilizer, however it also has traces of heavy metals and such in it. once applied, the metals are pretty much there for ever. it seems to be done more on farms that are in the path of development, as the developers remove the topsoil anyway when they build. i decided i didnt want it on my farms.

Septic tank sludge wouldn't bother me at all.

Municiple sludge is something to ponder on - it can have heavy metals in it, depends whatr industries are in town. Some is processed & has no restrictions on it - that probably wouldn't bother me. Some has application guidelines & limitations and is permenently recorded by the govt - that I would not want.

You are what you eat.

Is it really all that much different than cow or horse droppings?

EPA catches you your not going to like it I currantly work for SYNAGRO and we spread human waste for local farmers but NEVER on human consumption crops only animal feed. crops that are subject to human consumption may not be planted for up to 38 months and it's very stricley regulated check out www.synagro.com The product we spread is heavily treated not to mention sludge out of your septic tank contains soaps and other household chemicals that won't help in the field If you want some more info e-mail me and Ill try to help

If you want heat from your nieghbors go ahead and do it.This same thing was tried here last year.People in the community raised he!! and got the news media involved. Then the County and State Health Dept. got involved. The stuff stank like crazy and the flies invaded everything. The stuff was full of heavy metals and everything else that was bad.Was being shipped in from the big cities up along the Eastern seaboard.A company had set up shop in an ajoining county and began selling and spreading it.Even had a couple of farmers get roughed up a little over it.The Health Dept. condemed it and the company closed up shop and left town.
