Newbie Question - feed value of oat straw?

I'm relatively new to farming (city boy, moved to the country), and we've been growing alfalfa hay since we bought our place (about 12 acres cultivated) seven years ago. I plowed and reseeded the hayfield this year, and we put up about 550 bales of oat straw after combining the nurse crop oats.

My question is whether the straw can be used for feed (I can supplement with grass hay if needed). We have an eleven y/o gelding Quarter Horse and three 2+ y/o Nubian goats (pets, pretty much). We've fed them alfalfa-grass hay the past two winters (since we got them).

I've been hauling the straw to the local sale barn, and it's been bringing around $3/bale (good for this area), so obviously somebody out there thinks it's worth something...

Straw has little or no feed value but it does have a lot of value as bedding for animals and is used a lot in gardens and chicken houses

The only way there would be any value to it is to grind and mix it with something of high protien or energy value. Oat hay on the average only is about 8% protein so the straw is way below that.

They'll eat it, & it'll keep them busy. What they don't eat will serve as bedding. Remember, they need fiber like anything else.

Assuming they're 80# bales, $3/bale = $275/ton.

Go the barn with straw, sell it, buy a big round of good hay for $150-200 ton. Critters will get a lot more nutrition, and you've made a small profit.

I do not know the feed value. but I have a few hundred bales that were loaded with oat kernals that didnt thresh out. My beef cows love it. They will run from a timothy/clover bale to come and eat the oat straw. The calves like it and it really cured all their loose poops they been having from feed change.

Thanks to all for the feedback. The quote above describes my straw perfectly, so I think I'll plan on using a mix of the straw along with some hay. We've been using about 150 bales of grass/alfalfa each winter, so maybe 50-70 of straw and 100 of hay should about do it...
