Pumpkin seed prep for winter

What do you all do to prep pumpkin seeds for winter storage after taking them out of the pumpkin?

I'd like to cut down on our seed bill for next year and thought we ought to save the seeds from the pumpkins that spoil early or from those that don't sell.

Thanks,
Thomas

Pick out some of your best looking pumpkins and sacrifice those.

You wouldn't choose the scrawniest calves to be your future breeders.

Keep picking seeds from the ones that seem to thrive the best in your particular soil / climate / cultural practices and you should see the genetics improve over the years. I have an acquaintance who moved from Maine to Tennessee -- even though he's a professional gardener (for museums), author, and has a significant side-business raising for farmers-markets, it surprised him just how big of hit in performance his seeds from Maine took in the move, and he's rebuilding by selecting the plants that thrive in Tennessee now.

I lay the seeds out on a sheet or two of newspaper and let them dry well. You can almost tell when they are dry by how they feel. I then put them in a bag with the top loose and place them in a drawer until I need them next year. Taking the seeds from the biggest doesn't assure you of anything. Pumkins need water and fertilizer to grow. Also a lot of luck helps.
