Shocking Corn

Hi, Well we had a good growing season in northern Maine so far. Ive even got a few peaches on the tree. My problem is that the beefers will not be able to eat all the corn. Does anyone know at what stage you would shock corn stalks and ears so they would preserve. Thanks ED

Both the grain on the ear and the stalks would need to be dry before shocking for the feed to be of good value without spoilage.

Will the shocks be stored inside after cutting?

There are not many around here that shock anymore. The ones that do run the shochs thru a recutter and blow it in to a silo. (mostly the Amish).

The grain is harvested and then the stalks are rolled up in large round bales if they want the fodder for feed.

Try to catch it as soon as the kernels begin to glaze over. Or when the bottom leaves turn brown. If it gets too dry, the binder will knock the ears off and you have to pick them up by hand [no fun at all] Once you have shocked an acre or two, you might wish you had a picker. Deer love to rip the shocks apart, so I blast them every chance I get. My corn is very poor this year so I don"t have much to work with. I have some videos on U Tube listed under b1cow.
