We recently bought our farm (40 acres) and it has a very neglected brome field of about 9 acres that I would like to rejuvinate. Problem is it is full of weeds. It has rag weed, goldenrod, milkweed and others. What do I use to get rid of the weeds and then what do i do to improve the brome grass stand? I have a D-17 and a 10 foot disk. I could probably rent a sprayer from the extention office and I was thinking of fertalizing this fall. Please any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

You need to spray it probably with 2-4D. Make sure you have enough of a Brome stand first, otherwise you may need to reseed it. It is probably too late this year to spray it because most of the weeds have already gone to seed. Brushhogging will give you the best results this fall. I'd have my sprayer waiting at the edge of the field next spring though! You may need to make two applications next year depending upon the weed pressure. Broadleaf weeds in a grass field are easily controlled. I sprayed an orchardgrass field for broadleafs this spring and it did an amazing job. It is relatively cheap to do also. Fertilizing some this fall with about 30-40 pounds of nitrogen will also benefit the grass.
