Versatile 555

I am also gonbna be including a 4x4 as part of my reduced "herd", the 555 seems like a noce sized 4x4 for my operation. One close by for under $9000, are they a good machine? Gonna start looking now as the 1206, 806, 1750, and 870 are all gonna be finding new homes this fall, or sooner.

Versatile is an excellent tractor, after you get away from the ones that had the cast axle breaking issues, but the "triple nickle" engine has a bad rep. Find one with a Cummins 855, straight six, fantastic lugger. Does take some acres to justify any 4x4. Couple hundred doesn"t do it- they are fine until you get the spendy breakdowns....then, it"s decision time, fix or park in the weeds.

We run a 500(older version of the 555) and a 950 series 2,both with the v-8 Cummins.Like anything, maintain them, and they will be faithful tractors like ours are.Nothing bad to say about either tractor, actually very impressed with them.I run both at 2500 rpm and don't pull the guts out of them.

RUN not walk !!!! away from a VT-555 Cummins motor. They where a problem child from the get go. If they ever are over heated just a little they will scrap the heads. Fifteen years ago they where hard to find at any price. Also had problems with the sleeves working loose in the blocks. Would scrap the block.

I would put my money else where. You could be buying a big repair bill. If you want cheap 4WD look at the Case 2470 or 2670. About the same age and would be in that price range.

There is a Case 2470 on Tractor house with duals for $8800 in Angus MN. 400 hour on engine major and 1500 hours on tires. Seems a good deal to me. (218)745-5854

I have nothing to do with this ad. Just looked like a better deal to me than a 555.

Leave it whereever on earth it's at. That way it's not your problem.
Versatile in general is fine... but find one with an 855/N14. The six is a much, MUCH better engine and it's cheaper to repair should that be necessary.
Likewise, avoid anything with a V-8 Cat. That's another plague you don't need. Steiger's with 3406 Cats... that's fine.
