DOT NUMBERS

No, they don't. The only requirement is that they be in a contrasting color on both sides of the vehicle and readable from 50 feet away.

No they do not have to be on the door.
Here is the regulation that covers it.

§ 390.21
(c) Size, shape, location, and color of marking. The marking must—
(1) Appear on both sides of the self-propelled CMV;
(2) Be in letters that contrast sharply in color with the background on which the letters are placed;
(3) Be readily legible, during daylight hours, from a distance of 50 feet (15.24 meters) while the CMV is stationary; and
(4) Be kept and maintained in a manner that retains the legibility required by paragraph (c)(3) of this section.

One of our company pickups got a ticket in New York City for using magnetic signs that displayed the company name. That was quite a while ago, maybe things are different now.

Its all right there in the link I provided.

(d) Construction and durability. The marking may be painted on the CMV or may consist of a removable device,

While your state or city can make some rules/laws they are not allowed to make rules that contradict federal law.

I always put the company name and numbers on the box on the trucks I have that way if you buy a new cab and chasis you don't have to pay for the lettering again.

Vito

i put the number on the box below the bed but never though about having to put my name on the truck always shy away from that but guess i well have to think maybe the magnetic one or have a decal made up at the sign shop. magnetic would probity work don't think my ole f350 well do 90 down hill. its 4x4 cab chassis with flat bed 4 /10 rear end so its no speed demon and here in north christian count ky lots hill and narrow road beside i am getting to dam old to drive over 80 but think for all the info and links to more info. everyone says the dot around here are starting to get nasty so guess i well get legal well try to.not sure that's possible . but going to give it a shot don't use my trailer as much as i use to but one wreck one ticket would pay for getting close to legal. heard they were going to start writing ticket for all trailer with out licensee. so guess they need to go to the golf courses first. here in ky use to if you pulled you trailer with a truck with farm plates you didn't need to licensee them. all that has changed from what i understand. i always had my goose neck licenses guess i well, have to get my little 14 foot lawn mower rv trailer license now also.

I just took a small sheet of stainless steel. I put my DOT number and Company name on it. I then mounted it just below the frame rail on the front corner of the flat bed. I have had it on three different trucks over the years.

go to your local truck stop, look around at the different trucks on where they put their numbers and letters, even ask some of them how they did it and why.
