Tire chains for a tractor

I have seen some tire chains for sale lately and was wondering how
you measure them to for the tires of a tractor? I've seen them but
the seller doesn't know what tire size they were for just the lengths
now. Is there a formula? I know basic math but wondering how you
measure the chains vs tire width?. Also just wondering if you guys
knew the dimensions of tire chains for a 12.4x38, 11.2x38, and
13.8x28?

I'm sorry, I don't have a chart but I think there is one on the web somewhere. There is some variation in how they can fit depending on the width of the cross chains and the length of the side chains. The same tire can within reason use chains that when laid on the floor are relatively long and narrow or short and wide. On my Farmall H the side chains are only about 1-2" down the sidewalls, where on the Massey 35 the chains come down 6-8" on the sidewalls. Both ways work fine in my experience.

I'd figure out the dimensions of the chain you need for your tractor.
Measure perpendicularly across the top of your tire from a point 3" or 4" below the lug to a point on the other side at the same distance below the lug. This will give you the length of the cross-chain.
Then measure across the face of the tire from the same point as above to the same point on the opposite side. This will give you the diameter of the cicle your side-chain will make when installed. Use Pi x D to get the length you need.
If the chains you look at are longer than what you need you can cut off the excess or after you hook up the chains you can bolt the end links of the excess to the side chains.

for double ring chains, 7 ring cross chains will work on 11.2, 9 ring cross chains will work for any of the sizes you mentioned. as far as length, i have added a few links to the side chains if they were a little short, and one time, spliced a set and a half together when i bought 9 ring chains from 28" tires to use on 38" tires. i found a second set with the same number of cross rings and cut one of the chains in half to lengthen the first set.
