OT: bogus phone calls

I get the odd call a couple times a week,i pick up the phone and nobody on the other end??
When i look at the callers #, it is only zero's!

What's that all about?

Somebody calling to scope out when you are home? caller ID disabled so you can't see who they are? I'd get an answering machine and put a couple lights/radios on a timer.

dave makes a good point, I thought it was just calls from India getting routed wrong. Lose the landline they are nothing but trouble anymore. If someone is casing your joint, you might want to mix up your routine a little.

Or the caller is a robot telemarketer that calls a dozen numbers at the same time, the first one to pick up gets the speel, all others get a dead line.

A lot of times on telemarketers, saying hello triggers a responce. If you say your name, it will stay dead.

That's it.

Sometimes when you are "first" to pick up you still don't get the sales speel. You can hear the telemarketers talking in the background because your caller is busy texting somebody and doesn't realize that they have a live one on the wire.

At our house it is usually the clinic trying to remind me of an appointment. They hide the nurses numbers so that you can't call them without going through the main number.

Automatic dialers will dial several numbers at once to keep the telemarketer busy.They connect with the first one to answer and the other numbers called are dropped.Same thing was used in collection calls we made years ago.

That happened to my brother-in-law at 2 am. Happened again 10 minutes later. He discovered his dad was trying to turn the TV off with the cordless phone and hitting the call button. Can you say OLD TIMERS?

Autodialers. Telemarketing companies want to make sure they don't give their sales people any free time, so they dial even when they don't have a salesman just in case one finishes up a call. So if you pick it up and they don't have a salesman, the autodialer drops the call and dials the next number on the list.

I had an odd one also, person said I had a virus in my computer and if I switched it on and followed their instructions , they would remove it.." Oh yeah! write me a letter"... they hung up.
