Allis Chalmers B Popping out of 3rd gear

Hi There, I just bought a 1947 Allis Chalmers B fixer upper just to save it from the grave.I have a problem with it popping out of 3rd gear when you let up on it or going down a slight incline. If I hold it in with the shifter it stays in. What I'm wondering is this an easy fix by pulling out the shifter assembly or will a good used shifter assembly fix the problem. Any Info would be Appreciated. Thanks Ben

I am not sure , but I think the tip of the shifter may not be shoving the rail far enough to allow it to stay engaged. You could pull it out and see how badly it is worn. Some guys build the ends up. Either that or change it.

Check the side plate that holds the forks. I have not seen bad ware on the shifter its self but who knows until you look.

You might get lucky and just have a shifter problem. The previous postings have covered that pretty well. Usually on the older AC tractors it is the sliding gear itself that has the corners rounded. People speed shift them into high gear while moving. When they miss and grind it knocks the edge off of the sliding gear. You can see it by removing the top cover. Which you will have off to check the shifter anyway. If the shifter looks good reach into the transmission with a long pry par and shift the gear and look at the corners of the teeth. If they are rounded then that is your problem. You have to split the tractor to fix it.
