What oil to use in a IH 656 gas tractor

Looking to change the oil in my recently purchased IH 656 tractor. What weight of oil do I use. The manual says sae 30. I live in southern Wisconsin and I do use the tractor in the winter. Do they still make sae oil?

Thanks

Joe

15-40 or even 10-30 in winter with light load.
IH started allowing 15-40 in the old engines that originally were only #10 or #30 motor oil, starting in 1983, stating that you should not run multiweight more than 100 hrs.

Use hytran in everything else and remember that the final drive / bull gear housings do not share hytran with the main transaxle. Each final drive housing has a fill / check plug on the rear side. Fill with hytran up to the plug hole.

i've switched all my gassers over to the same oil my desels use.. IE.. 15w40.

if in real cold areas even consider 10w30 C rated diesel oil if your oil pressure is good.

Whatever oil you use it is important to use a low ash oil in those engines to extent exhaust valve life. Diesel oils generally have a high ash content because the ash is used to neutralize the acids formed in the crankcase by the sulfur residue from the fuel. On the 656 gasoline engine the high ash oils will leave carbon residue on the valve stems that will cause them so stick open when the tractor is put under load. When that happens it will burn out the valve just like using a cutting torch on it.

Once you take out the check plug and get your tranny full of hytran to where it runs out, get a stick, ruler, yardstick, dowel, or whatever to stick into the fill hole to make your own dipstick. Run it all the way to the bottom and make a mark. You can measure it as well and write it down. Then you never have to pull the check plug again. A lot of them old tractors develop an air leak around the main shaft seal of the tranny which affects your hydraulics. Then we usually just add an extra 5 gallons. Mark that on your dipstick if yours needs that. Don't leave the stick in the tranny though.
