(OT) Propane current prices

Just got the 330 gallon tank filled and found out that I had only contracted for 400 gallons, so...I got 87 gals. left on the contract to finish it out but, the rest of it was $2.709 per gal. Nice surprise and $443 from the hip... and only 73% full, deal was for 80%.
Questioned them about buying my own tank prices and over contracting an extra 100 gals. They explained that there would be a penalty of 10 cents a gal. for the overage so, here are their contract prices:
My contract for 400 gals--$1.899 (they at first wanted me to go for 200 gals....bummer!)
The rest of the tank fill cost me $2.709 as my contract was over
If I own tank...$1.899
Prebuy--Pay for it in all the fall...$1.779.
So, hows the prices in your area? Did I get stepped on a bit? It would cost around $1676 to get the cheapest price from Buckeye Propane. And they tell me that it would take me around 3000 gals. to break even on that. I also told her that I could shop around for the cheapest price if I own the tank. Whats your advise? They appear to be getting like the gas stations with yo-yo prices. $660 for a refurbished tank and thats exactly what they put in for me...and the gage didn't work and I paid them $625 to set the tank

I would check around for a co-op electric/gas company if there is one in your area. I"m in mid-michigan. I pre-bought for 1.79/gal last summer, went through my limit yesterday and paid 1.99/gal for the overage (which is their standard rate for everyone without a contract this year). They own the tank. Most companies have a tendancy to get you in with a lower rate, then hit you hard during the winter when you need it the most. The 2.79 you were charged is excessive, but it happens all the time and there is very little you can do about it.

I paid $1,200 for a new 500 gallon tank over a year ago.
I paid $2.09 per gallon for propane a month ago.
Michigan.

Wait till they tell you they're going to start charging you $175/yr just to have their tank whether you use it or not. AmeriGas did that to us, called them & told them to come get their tank when it was empty. Put in a pellet stove & bought our own 100# tank for backup. Everyone is trying to make a buck however they can nowadays. That would be like me sending my customers a bill for having my semi sitting in the driveway, just because the I /could/ haul something for them if they wanted me to.

I only use propane for the stove. Got a 500# "pig".

Just got a top-off. 29.9 gallons @ $4.34...

YIKES! Gonna hafta start cooking on the wood stove!

I have owned my tank for the last 17 years. Contracted 700 gallons last summer at $1.62 a gallon. Have to buy atleast 80% (560 gallons ) by March 31 to fill contract. This will not be a problem. With gas going up, propane won't be far behind.

Friend paid 4.00 last fall.I do my cooking on my kitchen wood stove stove. We have an electric range but I avoid using it.Many people will be changing their ways.My mother had a 2 burner kerosene stove that she used in hot weather for cooking.I have acres of fire wood,no coal, oil, propane on the place.

I own three 500 gallon tanks, one for my house, one for my shop, and one at our rental house.

Last summer, I contracted 1,000 gallons for the house at $1.60. Still haven't used it all.

Had my shop tank (not on the contract) filled a month ago for $1.73 off the truck.

Our renter in the rental house is on his own as long as he doesn't let the tank go empty, especially in mid-winter.

Beyond that, I haven't checked cash prices lately.

I live real close to Buckeye Propane's headquarters and in my opinion they are one of the worst propane dealers out there.

I own my own tank and my feeling is I have saved probably 40 cents a gallon on every gallon I've bought since I got the tank. When you rent a tank, theyve got you by the short hairs and they know it. I think I paid for my tank in about 2&1/2 years.

I have been getting my propane on a pre-buy contract from Thrifty. Their service is much better and their pricing is easier to understand.

I hate to tell you folks but as far as fuel goes in the near term you are going to have a lot more pain. The situation in the mid east is only the tip of the iceberg. Make the best of it while you can!

I own my own 1000 gal tank and only use for backup in bad weather so usually less than 400 gal year. filed the tank on 4 July special something like 346 gal at 4 143.00 with 4% discount if paid in 10 days. Price of MILK jumped 28 cents a gallon here today.. still $ 2.99 a gallon at local juke joint but wally World went to over $ 4.00 today

Some of the best money you can spend is owning your own fuel tanks. I own all of mine:gas, diesel and propane. I did this thirty years ago now. I found out that I could save thirty cent per gallon on my diesel at that time. I just bought another new 1000 gallon propane tank for a rental house last fall, $1495 DELIVERED. I find 500 gallon tanks on Graig"s list for $400-500.

When you own your own tank you can call around and see who is cheaper on fuel. The one place I get propane from takes ten cents per gallon off the top if you own your own tank. Just filled the tank at the grain bins to use up the last of my contracted fuel,$1.39. Truck price today was $1.85.
