As the title states--One small example is that I needed a switch for one of the burners on an electric Range. I called the local dealer and was quoted a price of $113.00 !!! I then got on line and found it ranged from over one hundred to $68.00. The least expensive was $38.00 out of Canada. I called them and they said they don't ship to U.S.!! :x
Ended up purchasing from CentralApplianceParts.com
Price was $76.98 and I got it in three days. Exact same switch as original.
I have also discovered that the big box stores are higher than small hardware stores many times.
In today's economy, decisions must be made to save as much as possible while patronizing American Suppliers.
At least this switch was not made in a Communist country :!:

My Garmin GPS went dead, took it to Best Buy to have it checked. They tell me that it can not be repaired and would have to buy a new unit. Checked around for a battery, found one on the web for $19.95 [shipping included]. I had lost $20.00 more foolisly,so I bought it,installed it,works perfictly.

Called the local electronic store - that advertises that they have the lowest prices - to price a replacement lamp for our Sony projection tv....$195. Found a genuine Sony on-line for $119....could have gone even cheaper but tried that route a year ago....

Howdy,
As long as we are on the subject-------I live in a small town (4736 pop.). Local business is always telling us to shop localy, I'm all for it but where do you draw the line? Couple of years ago we needed another freezer (main freezer was full to capacity), I shopped locally and could not believe the prices. We got in the car and drove 40 miles to the big box store and saved $100.00 including delivery. Another time I bought a thermostat for my electric water heater, paid $38.00 locally. On my next trip to Fleet Farm I saw the same thermo for $7.95.

On Tractor Related----I did some work on my 364 IH lift. The lift cover gasket was in poor condition and I called the dealer for a new one. He didn't have it in stock and it was $28.00 ??? or so, and would take two days to get it.
I went to an automotive supply store and purchased a sheet of 1/32" gasket material and hammered out my own. Just as good and the cost was less then $10.00.
Of course some people don't have time to make a gasket but I have made many, many gasket and it has got me by many times.

Ya gotta watch Walmart.

Check their prices on many items and you'll find in most cases one package of four of something is priced higher than the total of two packages of two of the same item.

They count on the public believing in quantity discounts, thinking that the more items in a package the lower the cost per item will be.

I bought a new TV antenna at walmart last fall for 60 bucks.I was at menards last week, they had the same RCA antenna on clearance for 14.95.

During my fall Canada fishing trip I had some starting issues with my Dodge 5.9 cummins 12 Valve. When got home I took it in to the local Dodge dealer. They quoted me, $800 for a fuel shutoff solenoid, $35 for the elec relay for it, and $240 labor. I left with plan B in mind.
I got on the Dodge discussion board. Found out that most time it is just the relay, and a dirty solenoid rod from a decayed boot on it.
Bought the boot and relay off ebay for less than 20 dollars. Dropped the solenoid, cleaned it, installed new boot, new relay.
Good to go for less than $20 and about 3 hours labor. A small savings of $1055

Goose, you got that EXACTLY right!
College kid was home at Christmas and we needed groceries (mostly because he was home!) so we went to Wallyworld. Several things I picked up out of habit and he told me to pay attention, that it was cheaper in the smaller package. Ever since then, I started watching (it's emabarassing when your kid teaches you something).
Went to Wallyworld yesterday for the wife, she needed 5+ pounds of cheap hamburger meat. 10 pound tube of 73/27 was $19.98. Tossed one in the cart and started to walk away when I remembered what the kid said so I looked again. Seems the 5 pound tube of 73/27 (exact same thing, half the size) was $8.79 each. Now I sure didn't need to have a calculator handy to figure that one out. Your point is well taken, now I can say I was warned by my son and a Goose!

Lot of buy local noise lately.A starter was quoted 100 to 150 bucks every place I called.Had one shipped in for 80 bucks.I pay 23 cents for a 3/8 bolt I use building picnic tables.HD and Lowes get 54 cents for the same bolt.I saved 140 bucks last summer just by getting my bolts at the right place.16 p spikes go for 1.60 a pound most places.Hardware store sells them in one pound boxes for 3.99.It pays to shop around.Seems to be alot of rip off going on.

Yep. The web has really changed the way I buy stuff. I needed a replacement barometric damper for an oil furnace. I try to buy local, so I went to three different HVAC supply houses. (They happen to be within a couple of miles of each other.) None stocked the part and only one was willing to order it and I would have to wait until the following week unless I paid for expedited shipping. I went on line and got the part for half the price the local supplier wanted, and I had it two days later.

One of the big local appliance parts distributors insists on charging an extra five bucks on every part for a "lifetime warranty". They must rake in an extra hundred grand a year from that little racket.

Whenever I can, I buy my appliance parts from two little old ladies who run a parts house in Pontiac (Bussard Appliance). They're not as cheap as the on-line stores, but those ladies really know their stuff. When they tell you to replace part X to fix a problem, they are always dead on.
