John Deere R Value

There is an R coming up for sale in a couple weeks and was wondering what it might be worth. It does run. They rebuilt the pony motor on it and couldn"t get it to run. They pull start it. It is average in shape. Grill has a dent in it and no lights. One rear tire wont hold air, may be tire or it could also be the rim. You can tell where it set in the dirt with a flat tire. Any info on what this might bring would be helpful. Has 540 pto and single hydralics.

Here, and West, a running R at 3 would be cheap. Tires are a minor item...especially if the tractor is good. Typical good shape here is 5 or more.

The "R" had a tendency to twist PTO shafts..

For the difference, you might want to look for a Black Dash 80 or Black Dash 820..
Lot more HP and 3 Main Bearings..not 2 like the "R"..
And the creeper gear is handy too..

FWIW..
Ron..

In Ohio they don't bring that much ($3,000) unless they are pretty nice and ready to go to the field..

Check to see if engine oil is getting into the transmission...If it is, the transmission will probably be over-full..maybe leaking out an axle seal if too full..!

An "R" should idle well at very low RPM..probably 200 or 250 RPM..maybe less..

No John Deere's or any other tractor for that matter is designed to idle that slow as far as I know.

they had pto issues but it had nothing to do with twisting any shaft. nothing to do with twisting at all. the issues were shearing a woodruff key in the early ones & idler bearing failure due to a lack of lube on the later ones, & the same poor lube design was used on the 80/820. splash into a reservoir. They just hardened the idler shaft that the bearing rides on, at the same time they eliminated the woodruff key, these issues were only on 50' and earlier ones. the shaft out the back is the same diameter as the 80/820. rumors & passed-on heresay are really something of awe to me.

Sometimes your ignorance precedes you....

Guess the twisted PTO shafts I have seen on JD "R" tractors were figments of my imagination..??
Well documented over the years...
80's and 820's don't usually seem to have twisted PTO shafts..perhaps did they change the design of the PTO clutch..??
Or are you that in love with the JD "R" that you will not admit this...
An "R" is a very fine tractor..a real 4-16" plow tractor (2nd and 3rd gear if healthy)).. I am saying the 80 and 820 is just that much more tractor..
Ron.

Oh, I agree that you are right..but an "R" will idle right down until you hear both cylinders exhaust separately each time and idle steady..
Sounds awesome...!!!
Like a low-compression "B" on steroids..!!
We pulled an "R" a couple years ago..18.4x34 tires ..always standing flame out the straight stack, front up but that FAST 1st gear always killed the engine..never did spin-out..!!
Had to stiffen the hitch..the hitch flexes too much without stiffening..
Biggest 45 Horses you will ever find...!!
Must have been Belgian Horses..!!!

Ron

i would disagree on splash oiling the R has a pump in the trans and oil is pumped up and over the gears on the top shaft run down over bottom shaft as well they only hold about 2/.5 gals in trans 80 820 830 all have trans pumps

As to the remark that "No engine will idle at
200 or 300 RPM", I know that you're refering to
tractors...BUT... As a retired railroad
Locomotive machinist/mechanic, I can tell you
that a General Motors, Electro-Motive Division,
2 Cycle 16V645 locomotive engine..V16, 645 cubic
inch per cylinder, 3000 horsepower, idles at
200 RPM. Top speed is 800 RPM.
