Getting ready for the next hay season.

Last weekend during much better weather, we went over to the hay field and took soil samples.

Found very little winter rye grass growing.

A few broad leaf weeds are just now getting started.

Nancy used the soil sample tool to take about 20 samples in various spots in the hayfield.

The top soil is sandy loam.

The last two summers we've brought in sandy loam to rework several areas in the hayfield.

Nancy mixed all the samples in the bucket and will send a small sample off next week for testing.

James, you have gotten it right, making Nancy do all the work and you taking the pictures. That"s all right. Email me about your hay meadows.

Nancy started taking soil samples many years ago with a light hand trowel.

This was a lot of work so last year I bought her a soil sample tool.

It makes taking soil samples a lot easier.

My job, besides taking pictures, is to carry the bucket.
