Iam looking for a 40 to 50 hp tractor to mostly just run a small square baler. Any stories out there? Or should i lean more towards 40/50/55 series? Not wanting to break the bank either.Any other ideas on a tractor?

Thanks RG

I grew up on a 2040 my father bought new in 1976. I stil have it and use it today. The odometer has quite working but I would guess it has somewhere in the neighborhood of 15,000 hours. Yes that is correct 15,000 hours. It is a sleeved motor and can be rebuilt without much difficulty. We found this out after the oil plug was taken out by some vandals. My father farmed 60 acers with it farming corn, soybeans, cucumbers, watermelons etc. I used it for ten years farming 5 to 15 acers of square baled hay. I later bought a bigger tractor to run a round bailer but still used the 2040 for cutting, raking, planting and cultivating crops.

It is a good versatile tractor that I would recommend to anyone.

Man i bet she was beauiful new. I like the looks of the first ones more than the tiger stripes.
Theres a nice original 1977,2200 hrs 2040, same back tires, 200 miles from me.The Dealer is asking 7500. They dont make them anymore like this.
Thanks for your great story. RG

Never hurts to and costs nothing to kick a tire on something new. Give a truer prospective to both price and value of used equipment.
Something said for something that has never been abused or have skipped service. Dealer incentives and years of warranty so no surprise repair bills.

Don't remember them being that powerful. Weren't they a 3 cylinder, same as a 1020? I had a lot of Deeres back in the 40 series days,I was thinking the only 40 series utilities made in the USA were the 2640s. Thought the rest were Manheim built? Wouldn't swear to it,that's been a while ago.

2040 would be plenty of tractor for a small square baler- and a real nice tractor to run, as well. You'll like it. No real need to go with a newer series- in fact, a 2020 would also be fine, if you can find a nice one.

'Course, there's nothing like a 6 cylinder Oliver, with independent PTO, just loafin' along. Smoooooth. Wish I still had the 880.

You are correct 2040 were built in Mannheim. First ones built for North American sales were open-center hyds. They were 3cyl engines rated @ 40 pto hp plenty enough to pull a sq baler. Very good utility tractors.

IF the speed hr meter is correct @ 2200 hrs and for a price of $7500 it would be hard to get a New tractor for close to that price.

BTW b&d RG5300 might need the extra money to remodel his wife's kitchen!!!!!!!!

That is a good price for one in good shape. They are selling ones that run with mismatched tires for $5000 here in Northeastern South Carolina. The early ones had a park gear in the transmissions. The later ones had a parking brake. Just some info.
