my 16' trailer. was stolen sometime last week. anybody in the north alabama area if you see a red double axle (house trailer axles) with a "bread box" style toolbox on right side please let me know. trailer is equipped with a removeable hitch. yea, if i had it removed it would still be here. uses 2 5/8 grade 8 bolts to hold it in place. it has 4 outside tie loops and 2 tie loop on the tounge. also has 4 tie downs bolted to floor. please post here if you happen to see it. deputy that took report said they was rash of this all over and it would probably be cut up for scrap. trailer was built with 5" and 3" channel iron and weighed 2000lbs. has sheet metal sides on 3 sides about 10" tall. floor is 2x8 treated with 2 floor screws in each board in every crossmember.

2000# minus the wood and tires minus gas and oxygen and time they wouldn't end up with much even at 240 a ton which is what scrap is at up here in MI. They are either going to use it or try to sell it. Hopfully someone will see your plees. They have a way of showing up. Hardest part will be proving it's yours. I spent the better part of a day "thief proofing" my new one including a few ways I can prove it's mine if they find it.Not going to elaborate on here , would kind of defeat the purpose , but they will need a rollback flat bed to get mine. Then at least I have something to help the cops find it. I don't mind telling the one thing I did because it may be a deterent to the theives reading this...It's "microchipped" and has gps locater. This is all for after it's stolen. All the anti-theft devices will only be divulged when you try to steal it. The best one will be in my vest so you better hope I don't catch you. Have a nice day. Let us know when you get it back!

have "several" ways of identifying it. i can tell things about how it is built that you cannot see without crawling under it. i even have pictures of it being built.

Sorry to hear your trailer got stolen. Can you post a picture of it? Might make it easier to spot.

will try -- the pictures are in a scrapbook at school where i taught. currently iced in -- will be next week before i can get to them.

Our 25 yr veterinary. They put them in all kinds of animals (inc dogs)he has no problem selling one over the counter to us. Imbed it in a blob of silicone wherever you choose to hide it. Just make sure you record where you hid it for your own reference.

sounds like a wonderful idea, but how long will they put out a signal? Don't they use some kind of power source? and who would you see that would keep track of it/ find location if lost.

Wade,

Sorry to hear about your loss. Our local farmers co-op had a 16 ft. stock trailer that they rented out. Someone stole it about 14 or 15 months ago. Never heard from it again.

The co-op has security cameras. They know that it was stolen on a Sunday morning right about daybreak, but the camera wasn't aimed right to see the vehicle or the guys who pulled it off.

We'll keep an eye out though.

If it is an RFID chip (which it probably is) it doesn't have a power source. The reader emits a wave that is actually enough to power the chip. The chip then sends the ID number back to the reader and it appears on the screen. Pretty cool little things. They also have them in some credit cards so you don't have to swipe the card anymore. Also in the new passports - supposed to make it tougher to copy.

Back in 1973 I had a helicopter transport trailer stolen from the airport. 35 ft. Goose neck. Parked it at 11:30 pm. went out at 6:00am. Gone!!! Reported it to State Police and locals. Gave them pictures. Thank God the Helicopter was not on it as I had unloaded it when I got there that night but it was a special use trailer but was never heard from or seen again. I feel for you. Larry,
Sorry to hear about your loss. What is the best way to prevent someone from stealing your trailer? What precautions will you take next time. I plan to purchase a new dump trailer and been worried that someone may steal it. What is the best locking system out there?
George

If you can get a chain through the wheel, and then around the axle, with good padlock is one way.

Well George, What I have done since then is put in removable hitches. On the goose neck, after you unhook and pull out from under the hitch, you just remove 2 pins ad drop the ball receiver off and take it with you. I then have a plug that I push back up into the neck and put the pins back through and lock. The pins are made of tool steel so there isn't much that will cut them. On the bumper pulls I chain a steel chock up between the tires on one side so it jambs against both tires. I guess that you could take a tire off once you break the locks and chain an axle up but that I think would draw attention. The other thing I do with the bumper pulls is I get a cheep ball of the right size and cut the stem off it so its just a ball. Then I push it up into the hitch and lock the hitch with the ball in it. That way they can't get under it with a smaller ball and drag it off. I also do this on all my trailers, and that is to lock the landing gear down so they cant get it up so they would end up dragging it down the road. The way I did that was to jack up the trailer to the level where it clears the ball and then add about 6 more inches. I drilled a hole through the leg area and inserted a tool steel pin with a hole in it and put a Trimax lock through it. I use Trimax locks on everything. But I have determined that a lock no matter how strong is only to keep honest people honest. The crook is going to get you if he tries had enough. LarryT

Hey WH,

That sucks. Watch craigslist.org. In fact, put an ad on craigslist. I would put a "Wanted to buy - trailer" ad on there and see if you get contacted by the thieves looking to unload it. Seems a lotta things that disappear, reappear for sale on craigslist.

Good luck finding it,
