Starter 6v or 12v ?

The starter on my 56" 300u needs replacing. The current starter is 6v, but the tractor has been converted to 12v. Should I be changing to a 12v starter ?

If youre replacing the starter anyway on a now 12 volt tractor, YEPPERS Id change to a 12 volt starter.

Most 6 volt starters work fine on 12 volts. Just don't try to use a 12 volt starter on 6 volts - that will NOT work. The lower the voltage, the heavier the wire used in the windings, and the higher the voltage, the smaller the wires need to be.

I would go with a 12 volt starter and then you will need to change the magnetic switch on top(of starter, commonly referred to as being a solenoid) to 12 volt also, it will have the additional terminal to feed battery voltage to ign on start up. Of course, you need to be using the original 6 volt ign coil with a external ballast resistor to get this advantage. Better system though.

Can you name any common tractor starter that was originally 6 volt, then hooked to 12 volt, and somehow suffered from it? I have changed many over the years and cannot think of a single circumstance where a 6 volt starter gave any trouble being used on 12 volts.

I'm not saying there isn't one out there, but I haven't seen it happen yet. I changed many Deere, IH,Ford, Oliver, Cletrac, Shaw, Case, and AC.

I strongly doubt you will find a 12 volt starter for your 300, unless you have an electrical shop rewind a 6 volt starter.

JD, Ive also used many 6 volt starters at 12 volts, both on cars trucks n tractors and like you , I NEVER HAD ANY STARTER PROBLEMS. I have had a few drives develop problems however.

The poster has to get a new starter anyway however, so in that case, of course, its best to get a new 12 volt starter instead of a 6 volt for his now 12 volt system. Had he asked is it okay to use my 6 volt Id say yessssssssss go for it.

Take care up North now while I keep an eye on things here in the South lol

About the very first 400 farmall I ever converted to 12 volt gave me some problems with the bendix drive kicking out when she was winding wildy so I put in 12 volt field coils and if memory serves me right the commutator end frame. It made for a more factory like conversion. No alternators in those days so put gen from latest 450 on it. Maybe in 1961 or so. I have two of my own tractors using 6 volt starters and 12 volt system with no problems and have done several others. The question was related to buying a different starter and I feel it would be best to go 12 volt.

There are two different 12 volt starters used. One used different field coils and the same armature as the 6 volt. The other used the same field coils but with a different armature. If you are going to convert one from 6 volts to 12 volts you can go either way.
