I find it interesting how genetic genes are able to duplicate themselves over and over. We all recognize black and white Holstein dairy cows, with their random spots and black angus, and red and white Herfords, just to mention a few. The genetics of a cows markings is very interesting. We can breed cows for milk production and high yield beef animals, but what caused the coloring and color patterns of of these Dutch Belts. I also have another neighbor with a few red and white DBs

Had a neigbor whose dad had gotten a white face black and white dairy cow for a wedding gift some 60 years prior out of which he built his herd. The majority of the herd was still whiteface. A very dominent trait.

Yes they are Belted Calloway? or as corrected Galloway,, no drawbacks or major positives to the breed ,, wonderful Unique ... my distant neighbor raised them until his divorce ,, then 4 yrs ago he moved up into your part of the Country ., ADK case guy ,, you may recall me stating that early on ..........but Me thinx my old friend wants to live the quiet annonymous life ,, lifes tumultous changes can do that to a guy ,, no matter how big and strong they may be,,.

Good to see that you have some "Belties" over there as there are not so many herds of those here these days. (Although the society will tell you otherwise ).
They are a very hardy breed and can thrive in conditions where most other breeds, including the Angus, would not.

the Dutch breed of rabbits is also belted this way. Apparently the Dutch like the color scheme & bred their animals til they got this coloration that would breed true.

As said below those are simply Galloways.

Due to a neighbors bull moving in on my herd when a tenant was running my farm we has some belteds in our herd.

Here is the MAJOR drawback (at least in this area) to those. Buyers give about 60 to 70% of full price for the feeders. It doesn't even have to have a full belt, any hint of a belt and the price drops fast.

Too bad because I like the way they look but just no money in them around here, KY by the way

Have a small herd of Dutch Belted Cows, belong to both Heritage Breed Assoc and Dutch Belted Cattle Assoc; for those truly interested in the breed go to http://www.dutchbelted.com Sometimes on this forum one needs to separate the wheat from the chaff.

The wood shoe dutch settled the St. Ann, Illinois area way back. Very flat sandy soil. On the Dixie Hwy in that area a farm has the belted cow's only ones I have ever seem. Travel by that small farm 3 or 4 times a year to see the cow's a change from city life.

So are Dutch Belted and Galloway one and the same? I always thought the Dutch Belted was a dairy breed, and Galloway was beef- sure looks that way from the pics on the two websites. Maybe kind of the same deal as the Shorthorn/Milking shorthord breeds?

Two breeds; Dutch Belt, a dairy breed was domesticated from a wild bovine in the alps, the Galloway, a beef breed domesticated in the Galloway section of Scotland.
