Ford Tractor won't start

My 1953 Ford Jubilee won't start. The battery is charged and the engine turns over fine. Gas is getting to the carb. How do I troubleshoot the starting system from the key to the plugs? It does not seem to be getting any fire.

Work backward from the plugs: Pull a plug, leave it in the wire, arc it to some metal on the head, see if you have spark, if not then see if you have spark fom the coil wire, if not then see if you have spark to your coil, if not then it's more than likely some combo of points/condenser/cap/rotor, but just to be sure see if you have juice at both sides of your ignition switch with the key on.

Use a volt meter or test lite to see if you have voltage at your coil with the points open and the ignition switch in the on position. If there's no voltage here check back at the ignition switch to see if there's voltage being fed to your switch and if there's any voltage on your ignition on your terminal that that feeds the coil. Check for a defective ballast resistor if there's one used between the ignition switch and your coil. Rub the points with some 320 wet or dry until they're shiny. Hal

one other thing, if your jubilee still has its original ' weak sister' ignition switch , start with that, check for power across the switch, if you have that switch it will be that switch about 80% of the time under those starting conditions

I suggest going over to the FORD site -- lots of know how to do with FORD folks there. My 2 cents, check the points and condensor for spark,

sound slike you missed the first step in ignition 101.. looking for spark. if no spark.. trace back till you find out where the voltage is going.. could be bad points.. bad wires.. bad key switch.. bad terminal block.. etc.

Thanks for the response. Actually, it has been so long ago that I have forgotten everything I learned in ignition 101!

But, I did check for a spark by taking the wire out of the distributor and turning over the engine. There was no spark coming from the coil.

Thanks for the response. I have been to so many sites that I would appreciate it if you would be more specific about which ford site you are suggesting. Thanks.

Thank you. Those are the steps I will follow. I appreciate the detail you provided. I did check for a spark coming from the coil wire by pulling it out of the distributor cap and touching it to the block. No spark from the coil.

If the points are not opening, would I get a spark or not from the coil?

Thanks. I appreciate the detailed response. I tried turning over the engine with the coil wire pulled from the distributor cap and there was no spark from the coil. I will check the points to make sure they are opening. If the points are not working properly, would that keep the coil from sparking?

then you need to start tracing back from there.. ie.. points, then power to the points.. then any resistors, then the key switch.. yada yada yada

Go to the FORD FORUM site right here on YTMAG. Click on the FORD ( not Ford 8n,9n ect.). The home page has the FORD icon as well as any of the other tractor type forums that you can view while searching for tractor info. EVEN this page has the FORD icon right at the top and last one on the right side. It is somewhat light in color with a grey background (it's a grey horizontal bar that fills the top of the page) and maybe that is why you can't find it -- all the way at the top of the page just above the RED horizontal bar that says "Tractor Talk Discussion Board". Click on it (FORD) and it will take you to the FORD FORUM of this site. It's a great one . you'll see. Let me know how you make out . Good luck. Jim in NY
