Ian Tyson A Canadian Legend!

For those readers who have no idea who Ian Tyson is, let me decribe him this way:

An American example I would have to say Willy Nelson, a real grassroots cowboy with songs such as, "Alcohol in the Bloodstream", "Eighteen inches of rain", "Horsethief Moon" then there is a song where Ian sings about real life on the farm/ranch where the wheel falls off of the tractor, etc.

A British example would be Roger Whittaker. Ian's song; "In 2005, CBC Radio One listeners chose his song "Four Strong Winds" as the greatest Canadian song of all time" I also like, "Irving Berlin (Is 100 Yrs Old Today)"

I must admit I have both Roger and Ian on my MP3 player and I just love listening to their songs!

The other night there was an interview with Ian on TVO and he was rather proud of his achievements, getting drunk with Janice Joplin, hanging out with the Peter, Paul and Mary, then he mentioned something about travelling to Texas and having his "Green Card" taken away, I am wondering if he was actually deported!

I trust this helps to answer your question.

Ian Tyson is certainly a Canadian icon in my book! I wore out to "Cowboyography" tapes in my truck back in the late eighties and today the CD "All the Good 'uns" isin the player of my current truck. My sister would play "Four Strong Winds" on the piano back home and I would sing that song with her....40 years ago. He is my greatest musical influence.

""Willy Nelson, a real grassroots cowboy""; sounds like you're maybe smoking the good stuff..........

hey! you forgot "Stompin Tom" . the good old hockey game. bud the spud. lukes guitar. saw him in concert in Edmonton this fall. for 75 years old still going strong and can pick that guitar as good as Johnny Cash.a real canadian icon.

Yep,,,Ya gots some good 1s up there...
Corb Lund is one i like,,,,Would like to go see him and here him sing Roughest neck around some time.........

Ian is one of my favs. But please don't equate him with Willie. Now don't get me wrong. I don't have anything against Willie and he's done some great stuff over the years. I could listen to "The Old Double Diamond" all day
The Old Double Diamond

Johnny Cash wasn't a great guitar picker. The really good guitar stuff came from Luther Perkins who was Johnny's guitar player who really was "the sound" that made Johnny famous in the beginning.

When I heard, "Old Corrals and Sagebrush" I immediately related Ian's songs to Roy Rogers and Gene Autry, then during the interview it was all confirmed, Ian was a fan of the early country singers from Appalachia.

Wife & I just finished 5,700 mile trip thru the Canadian rockies and Alberta, Saskatchewan. Phot's and scenery was like we saw--AMAZING!

I was thinking the same thing.

Willie Nelson ain't nothing but a "doped up old hippie".

Chris LeDoux,... now, there was a real "grassroots cowboy".
