'88 S10 Not idling

Not a tractor question, but I take the little girl to get tractor parts, so does that make it ok to ask a truck question on here?

I dont drive it that much, it starts hard, and when it does, it doesn't idle. I press the gas pedel and it seems like its starving for fuel.

I changed the fuel filter and the pump does hum, when the key is turned on.

thanks

check the gaskit under the carb or throtle body -- i use the spray carb cleaner aimed at the base-my 89 s10 did same and that what was wrong

I vote for faulty EGR valve. If it's stuck open, or even leaking a little, it won't idle at all. you may be able to clean it out. I've "fixed" several of them by cutting a small section of a pop can to cover the holes and just slide it under gasket and bolt the EGR valve back on. You may have to live with a constant "Check Engine" lamp, but if you're cheap like me, it will work.
By the way, be sure to take a look at the base gasket for the TBI unit, too. They are notorious for developing leaks, although most of the time, they cause a fast idle. HTH
Good Luck and God Bless

S10, 1988, 4 cyl. I had to disconnect batt about once a month to reset computer. Had it changed once, too. Also there is wire feeding fuel pump that is not protected and will chafe bare and cause trouble. Sorta under drivers side. Eventually may blow fuse. All I know.
