Wife just made another 20 pints for Christmas presents. Gotta scrounge up more apples off the pastures this weekend cause the first stage before all the seasoning goes in makes real good applesauce.

It is a nice gift. My daughter used to make it with me and a lot of her friends really enjoyed getting it as gifts. This year she said we need to make apple butter this year dad., so now that she is almost 18 I guess that means dad has to make it by himself, because she is too busy for dad anymore! lol

Hey, Max!

I like your style. My grandfather always made a big batch every year. I've got his old copper kettle, and paddle.

For the paddle he made a rig to clamp onto each end of the bail on the kettle with a crank on top that he could reach with a pole with a hole through it. The shaft down was square and had four blades at the bottom to scrape and stir. All made outta walnut he cut off the farm. Neat rig.

All I gotta do now is get a good reliable recipe and a new ring to hold the kettle. I assume it's low fire and a long slow cook???

you got me there, I would love to join in and help and be able to see that being done, sounds like a great family tradition and it is nice to see it keep going . At the very least Ibetter make another batch! lol

the recipe I used was 5 qts peeled and chopped apples 31/2 cups sugar 3 teaspoons cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground cloves 1/2 teaspoon salt Let it cook 1 hr on high then turn it down and let it cook a long time , at least 10 hrs stirring occasionlly. When you can stick a spoon in it and it stays standing straight it is done. You dont have to can it if you dont want to, you can keep it in the fridge for awhile, The cinnamon and cloves are to your liking , you can change those amounts to taste witout any harm, This is one recipe ,ther are many more, Good luck , give it a try, I think you will enjoy it , and it really worked out well for us, much easier than cooking it on the stovetop.
