I have a hand driven point well at my cabin up north. It is getting old and I think the point is getting plugged. The pump will run for 10-15 minutes and then the pressure drops off. If you shut the pump off for 10-15 minutes then turn the pump back on the pressure returns fo another 10 - 15 minutes. I think I have plenty of water at the point because I am on the shore of a lake. Anybody have any ideas for how to unplug the point short of replacing it.

Although I have never tried it, I have heard many times that people have fired a .22 down the casing and the concussion will clean the point. I also know there are products (acid product?) that well companies use to clean screens. We recently had one done in one of our campgrounds by a well driller.

I wonder if it is a shortage of water rather than plugged. But, how about back blowing it with the biggest air compressor or pressure water pump you can find?

If it is a shallow well, just jack it out of the ground. A plate with wedges to grab the pipe, 1" thick, and wide enogh to put two 10 ton jacks under on each side will pull it out of the ground by brute force. I have pulled many points, and none of them had less than what appeared to be scale on the outside of the screen. All other methods could lead to getting contaminants (soil/sand/mud) into your water, as you would not know what you were putting a hole in. (do you want lead in the well!) Jim

needs to be blown with a big screw type compressor like they use on jack hammers and sand blasting pots...the air opens up a cavity around well point to create a resevoir to increase flow.
local driller could do it pretty quick.

I did that several years ago to my barn well. I used acid in it first and that didnt clean it so used the 22 and it did work, I had to run water on the ground until all the acid got out

I am with Janicholson on this one. Jack it up if you can and replace the point. Otherwise get your buddies around and drive a new well. How deep is the well now?
My well guy said that there is a difference in the well points. If you install a cheap one it will clog a lot quicker than a better designed one.

He's got a sand point, the point screen will be damaged by rifle fire. Air compressor is the way to go, let pressure build to 30 or so,, then release into well point. Don't want to over do it, by letting tank build up to high pressure, then letting it go, you might crack something.

Sandpoints have habit of pluggingbup in time. Get some good stong acid and pour down. Let set aday and then pum it hard snd long. The acid disolves the calciun and opens up the sand point.

Take the pump off and drop a hex nut on a string down to measure water rise in well first. If none then do as others advise but I really don't think that's your problem. I believe it is either your pump / fittings or the casing may be leaking air in which case you need to put down a smaller than casing drop pipe and hook your pump to that. You didn't say what size the pipe/casing was or if you had a drop/draw pipe inside it. Most don't. Let us know what you find.

That is a painful place to have a well, but it can be pulled. If it is on a slab, just let the pipe come out the top until it hits the ceiling or roof, then cut it off. Repeat as needed. When re-driving, it will follow the old hole easily.
Other than that, drive a new well several feet outside the building. and adapt it underground to the kitchen. Jim
