Tach/Hour Meter Repair

The Tach/Hour Meter on my John Deere 750 took a dump today.

I'll price a new one, but I got an idea it'll take my breath away.

Is there anybody out there that repairs these things, and is it likely to be any cheaper than buying a new one?
 
Check ads in "green Power" and "Antique Power"
magazines. Also "Hemmings Motor News" under
"Services" has many sources that repair gauges
and instruments.
Have you checked this site,Y/T, under "Parts"?
Also try "Steiner Tractor Parts" at WWW.steiner
tractor.com, or "nnalert" tractor parts at
www.nnalert.com, both have new, used, rebuilt
tractor parts.
 
I figured you might get lucky on this so I looked it up on jdparts.com.

Nope, NOT lucky! Just a little change under $300!!!
 
Is that electronic or mechanical? I've had older mechanical aircraft ones repaired(basically the same as older tractor ones) and I don't think I spent that much.
 
Fix it yourself. All it takes is a delicate touch with a ball pein hammer and a little duct tape. Might need a screwdriver to pry it open, but even the current crop of Craftsman screwdrivers will work for that.
 
I had the proofmeter on a late model Ford 2000 repaired once. Tach worked but the hours had quit. I looked in the yellow pages for speedometer and found a place here in Minneapolis who said they could probably fix it.
They ended up having to send it to California somewhere. It came back about 3 weeks later and looked brand new and worked perfect.
Cost was $150 IIRC.
Could have bought a new one off ebay for about the same money but it was nice to have the original and not the plastic china made.
 
If it is mechanical just uncrimp the crome ring and look what's wrong and fix it. I've done it to a couple of them over the years. Usually it is one of the plastic gears and you can build it up with epoxy and file the tooth back into shape.
