Tire chains shipped in a barrel?

I bought a set of tire chains today at an auction that were packed in a barrel in which they had come from the factory. Has anyone seen this kind of thing before? I never thought about how new chains were shipped because I always saw used ones being sold and they just laid them out on the ground. I got the set for about $65 with tax and they have almost no wear. I may need to extend them slightly to fit my 14.9x38 tires on my H, but I bet they'll be a big help this winter.

The set of 20.8x38 chains Dad ordered many years ago came in two cardboard barrels. One of them was the original barrel, marked with the chain size. They split them into two barrels so UPS would take them (75lb limit).

Your problem may be with WIDTH. 14.9 tires are quite a bit wider than 11.2. All you can do is try them. You've got nothing to lose at this point.

Careful laying them out. It's too easy to get a fold or twist within a twist. I've seen some chains on equipment with some wild kinks. Can't be good for anything.

Lots of stuff used to come on barrels similar to that. Bolts, nails, hammer and ax handles, maple taps, stuff like that. A garage I worked at had chains in the attic from the 40's and 50's, all in heavy canvas bags with mounting instructions printed on the outside, sewn in handles and buckles to close the bags kind of like on galoshes.

I live and work as a volunteer at a farm that is charitable tax exempt. The farm owns and pays to maintain the Massey 35, but the Farmall H belongs to me (even though I use it here) and I am not personally tax exempt. I think to get a farm exemption you have to have a certain income level from farm products.
