Just wondering what are opinions as to best tractor of the 1960's era. High flow hydraulics, speeds,(Very slow low gear and reverse,) 60 hp to 100hp class. I want to buy a tractor for a do-all work horse, anything from planting tobacco, three point snow blower, baling hay, three point log splitter, moving round bales etc.I would want a torque amplifier or something similar. TIA

I think a better question would be what tractors to avoid. There were many good tractors in the 60's. Dave

(quoted from post at 17:10:29 10/15/10) John Deere 4020--none finer
It doesn't have the power shift he's looking for, unless he went to a 4020 PS, in which case he could buy a newer tractor for the same money. An 1850 Oliver would do the job nicely, or a Farmall 806.

a 4020 is certainly a nice tractor but an IH 856 would out work the jd, for less money you can get a 9/1070 case with good cab with ac

Just get a 4020 and be done with it ! Find the one in best shape for the least money and buy it.Plenty of them around to look at.

Didn't you ever brag in school that the one your dad owned was the best one out there. So this probably included all makes. Used to tell them, thats why the A's and B JD's had the tool box up by the engine, cause you had to work on them. HA, HA.

I agree there were several good tractors of that era but one consideration would be to have a good local dealer that could help you get parts and or repairs.

lots and lots of good choices here. i like the olivers the best so id say a 1850 or a 1655. But there are lots of other options like the JD 4020, Farmall 806, Massey 1100

id stick with a jd, oliver or farmall. They all made great tractors that are still used on farms today.

With a sigh I'd have to recommend a 4010 or 4020 as the all around tractor. But any of the previous suggestions are fine. I grew up with the Oliver 1800's and up and was heartbroken when the off color green thing was sitting in the driveway. But for all around it was probably the best.
