tire chain question

Was given a set of tire chains for my farmall H.One chain is fine. The other chain in one spot of the tire pulls to the outside, then half way around the tire its pulling to the inside when moving the tractor.I am concerned that it may walk off the tire. The chain is sucked up to the last link on each side, and seems to be as snug on the tire as the other side. The one thing I noticed is the buckles are not straight across the tire, they are about 5" difference from side to side.I dont want to have to worry about it coming off in the middle of pushing snow.Soooo,is my answer as simple as reinstall the chain and make sure the buckles are straight across the tire? I have never had chains or put them on.So think like my wife, make sure to be very detailed in your descructions.Well maybe not that bad.Good day everyone.

I'm only guessing here but maybe someone has spliced in a piece of the side chain and made one side un-even? Or you have a cross chain twisted. I'd take it off and lay it flat on the floor and see how things match up. All the cross chains should be even on both sides. Some go straight across, some are Xed in the center. But either shoud have their attaching points oposite. The "buckle" being a few links off one way or the other should not make any difference. But maybe the reason it is off is making a difference.

Check the side links. sounds as if one or two side links broke and were replaced with different lengh links. I had your same problem,
found this was my problem. gg

Only way a tire chain can walk sideways on a tire is if it is too darned loose.

If you have too much chain, double it back on itself and tie it down.

If one of the buckles is off then the chain is tighter on one side. Like Nedraska Cowman said take them off and lay them out and see what is off. Chains get broken all of the time. Plus if the links are worn very thin then they will just keep breaking. I have several old sets that are junk because of link wear. They don"t last long if you do much road use.

I'm with JD; pull them off and lay then out flat with all the cross links stretched out.
Sometimes a part of the chain will get "turned inside-out. You will know what I mean if you see it. The cross chain attaching links need to all be facing in the same direction.

Thanks guys, You have all confirmed what I thought the issue to be. I will take it back off and give it a good going over. It dont seem to be loose so it made the most sense that the thing just may not be square. Good thing snow wont be hear for a couple more months I hope. I am just triing to get it ready. You boys have been a great source of information to us old tractor owners that are informationally challenged. Thanks again.
