Thanks Dave & Irv for the follow ups. I ordered an operators manual for this model 30 but is there anywhere online I can have a look at one until mine arrives in the mail? Secondly I found a # stamped into the engine above the distributor B556. Thats probably just a casting number eh? I'm not certain what is refered to as a "frame rail" but could it be possible that the serial number is blocked from view by a front end loader arm?

Frame rail also called the tub, heavy cast piece that goes under and around the engine and fastens the front end to the rest of the tractor. Will be about 3/4" thick at top of piece and flat and that is where the number is stamped. Depending on loader could be blocking it or covered with dirt-grease or even paint.
