PTO shaft breaking

I have a ford 900 and the pto shaft either twist or breaks after twisting from use. Is there a beefed up rewtofit for this problem, suchas increasing the inside spline to 1 3/8" and modifying the shifting collar accordingly.

If you are twisting it either the slip clutch is seized or overtightened,or the shear bolt is not the correct grade,or the implement is undersized for the tractor(20 hp rated driveline with a 45 hp tractor)

If your pto on the driven machine is to long or short it may be getting in to a bind where something just cant go back together or is bottoming out.

What transmission does your tractor have, and what are you trying to power with it (description, make and model)?

If the Tractor shaft is twisting off it may be that the IMPLEMENT is TOO LARGE for the TRACTOR not the other way around. Too much load for the shaft would break the tractor shaft. Too much tractor for the implement would break the implement shaft.

Whatcha doing exactly, and which model of 900 (940, 950, 960, etc) do you have?

Is the pto of the tractor twisting off, or the shaft of the implement you are using, not real clear on what is going wrong.

Is pto engagement abrupt and the cause of twisiting? Or twist off occurs during surge loads?
The slip clutch actually should slip a weenie bit on every plunger stroke. Similar to the fan clutch slippage used in the fan clutches used on two cylinder Deere's. If some brainiac welds or pins the fan clutch together. The drive gears fail shortly after.

(quoted from post at 18:29:03 09/28/10) If your pto on the driven machine is to long or short it may be getting in to a bind where something just cant go back together or is bottoming out.

I busted a ujoint on my drum mower for that reason. Had the shaft been a foot or so longer I could picture it twisting.

If you have something like a rototiller in the ground and then engage the PTO or shut the tractor off with the the tiller in the ground has been known to break PTO shafts. Dave

Tractor PTO shaft, not the implement shaft? Yes, the replacement shafts are supposed to be induction-hardened. If you are breaking your shaft and you didn't get a new replacement from CNH, there's a good chance you got a weak replacement. Pull out your wallet!

I just went to the New Holland online parts catalog and did some research. The PTO shaft was changed from 1-1/8" to 1-3/8" in 1955. It looks like you can replace the entire PTO assembly with P/N 310084. (They show a part name of "SUPPORT", but the picture clearly shows that it's the entire assembly.)
