Best way to level dirt.

Used my 1950 IH C with 6 ft belly mower to level dirt. This is better than a box blade or grader blade.

That's a good way to wreck your belly mower and it wouldn't take much. I guess if you're not planning to use it as a mower anymore, it doesn't matter.

Why not drag something behind the tractor like a beam or an upside down section of harrow. Then you wouldn't have the tire tracks. The way it is, you're going to have to hand rake it to get the finish grade. Dave

Nice innovation If I knew it was clean dirt I might try it myself. However if it hits a brick, then a rental looks cheap. Jim

135fan, This is a well made Woods mower amd this isn't the first time I've used it to level dirt. Been doing this for years. Mower isn't the least bit damaged. Sorry to disappoint you. BTW, this was loose dirt I was using. You may also notice I have extra bracket supports made from thread stock.

We bought an old Gallion grader to do that just so we would have more toys to play with.!!!!and drive the ole lady nuts. Hoss

I wasn't commenting to offend anyone. I'd hate to see that belly mower get damaged. Kind of the same thing my neighbor told me years ago when I put a loader on the 135. He said, remember this is a lighter duty farm loader and isn't designed to do the work of an industrial loader. Very good advice if you ask me. Dave

I bet if you replaced that board with an actual piece of grader blade, it would just be the cat's pajamma's for maintaining a gravel drivewey. I don't think the C would have enough poop to damage the mower anyway.

It warn't made to mow dirt. Can you get away with it ? Yeah until you hit a high spot. But the fact remains , it warn't made to mow dirt. Heavy duty mower does not equal box blade.

I have mowed with one of those woods mower for over ten years under a B Allis Chalmers. More than once I have been looking right when I should have been looking left and caught a fence post that stopped the tractors forward movement with a rear tire spinning. The only thing that was hurt was me from the sudden stop which only lasted a coupla minutes. He aint gonna damage that mower using it like that. Woods didn't build them out of tin like lawn mowers. I have used mine for years to mulch the manure I haul on my hay fields so as not to feed it back. I bought my Woods mower used and after 10 years I just replaced all the spindle bearings because one had started to whine. Back like new again. Kinda tickles me to see advise about things that just prove the person giving the advise has no idea of how the thing they are giving advise on is built or works.

Dick, You are right on! You may want to add the wood to protect your blades. I have the 2x6 1 inch below the blades. I was mowing the road side and looked down. I was pushing a muffler. I covered up tree roots in the pic. The wood lifted the mower when I went over the roots and saved my baldes. Try it. I'm sure you will like it.

Hi George, Yes you have it figured out, always good to put the blade in between wheels. That is what road graders are all about. Same Idea as wheels on a York rake. Huge difference Dave
