I suspect it will have the wrong additives and won't be as efficient. Would be suprised if it did damage to an older mechanical injection system from running a short time. I would get ahold of him and make him swap it out.

Chris, don't be a tractor wet nurse/nanny!

An older mech injection system can handle anything from jet fuel to kero to #1 or #2 fuel oil without ANY problems.

I DON'T know what is wrong with the fuel he got, but if it's REAL jet fuel, kero, or #1 or #2 diesel the injection system/engine should handle it with NO problems.

Jet fuel (JP4) and/or Kerosene has greater solvent properties and the septane rating is lower than diesel. This will effect cold starting and BTU output of the engine.

Running a diesel engine on jet fuel or kero for a short while will not hurt anything except it may clog your filters as the solvent properties work on the dirt in your system.

If you find out you do have pure jet fuel or kero in your tank now drain it down low enough you can add #2 diesel to make a 50/50 mix or more. This will be regular winter diesel once you have it mixed.

Stinks to high heaven don't it? :>(

It's that darned Bio they are blendin' in anymore.

After a season or two of using the stuff, I don't even notice it too much..........except the high prices.

Had a tenant steel racing fuel from neighbor. My mower wouldn't run. The fuel smelled to high heaven too.

The smell of jet exhaust does not smell the same coming out of an aircaft as if it is put in a tractor engine. We run our tow tractor on jet fuel and the combustion on a turbine engine produces a smell totally different than a diesel.

We used jet fuel in big generators when the temp was real low and it didn't jel. Even when it was -20F. Hal

If the fuel is jet fuel/kerosene, and you are using it in a diesel engine, I'd personally dump a quart or two of ATF in the main fuel storage tank and mix it a bit. This way you get some lubrication from the fuel. Jet fuel does not have the lubricating properties that diesel does. The fuel will work, but like others have said not as many btu's.

BTW, the army went to using jet fuel vice diesel in all the diesel vehicles when I was in.

I love the stuff to burn in my Knipco heater. Burns really clean in it. My son worked at the local airport as a maintenance man. One of his jobs was to clean the sumps on the fuel trucks regularly. He always brought me lots of good fuel and burned all he could get in his diesel pickup. Everyone there did the same. No problems with it.

If it's jet fuel, it shouldn't hurt anything, but if you are having a starting problem, you might have something else. They carry a lot of different things in those tanker trucks. We once got a load of Jet A that was contaminated with molasses previously carried by the truck and not cleaned out good. Talk about a screw up!

any diesel idling in a closed garage for ten minutes is gonna be very strong. starting in an open shed you can hardly get it out quick enough. i understand the smelling different though.

MY uncles bought a late model CASEIH combine out of the midwest this year. When they started using it, it sounded like it was missing on about 2 cylinders and smelled like it was ready to die, kinda like it was ready to seize. They had it checked out and determined that it had Biofuel in it that was old and bacteria was growing in it. They drained the tank, changed the filters and all is well now.
