Was out trimming the grass down the rifle range from my hose to the targets. With the 5ft Bush Hog rotary mower and the noise started.
Looked back and found the entire under deck rotating assembly of the blades, "t"-bar, stump jumper pan and both blades sitting on the ground.
Snapped the vertical shaft off at the base of the gearbox.
Glad the deck was down sliding on the ground instead of up a few inches. The entire assembly stayed trapped under the deck instead of cartwheeling to who knows where.
Have to price the vertical shaft/T-bar/stump jumper pan, bearing & seals. Maybe cheaper to look for another rotary cutter. Just put new blades on the swine a few months ago too.

Very common problem with Brush hog. I have probably replaced at least a dozen of those shafts in the last few years. Friend of mine had one to break and he had only run the cutter about three hours.Every one I have replaced broke in the center of the bottom bearing.

Ouch!
I have an old 305 BH (503?) that I was backing up along the edge of the river to cut the brush/weeds along the bank. Going good till all of a sudden everything went quiet.
I shut down and raised the mower and found the entire stump jumper and blades had come off and were no where to be seen. I had to put on my swim trunks and go searching in the muddy river with my feet. Found the thing about 20' away from the bank and had to heft it back up on shore.
The big nut holding the stump jumper on had come loose and the whole thing went flying off like a frisbee.

Lost the stump jumper and blades on one spindle of my JD MX8 mower a couple of weeks ago with the mower in the air while turning around.....just did a spin in the dirt and died. Now if I would have been backing up, I might have lost a tire! Fortunately I just had the bolt come loose that held it to the gearbox shaft...can't figure out why it came loose....maybe hitting too many gopher mounds???
