Just wanted to see how the canning/ harvest is going. Not getting quite the yield we were hoping for (still pretty decent) and are seeing a little woodiness at the top of the tomato. Want to see based on opinion if I should change anything going into next year. The tomato with the woodiness is one we decided to try this year along with our old standbys. Probably won't transplant it for next year.

A variety that never fails to please us is Celebrity. Beautifully shaped, slightly larger than a baseball. Great taste with just the right amount of acid. Very disease resistant. Good production per plant. We'll include other varieties in our garden but Celebrity is the foundation.

(quoted from post at 12:18:48 09/10/10) Bad year for tomatoes here and a lot of places.
Don't over look Big Beef
my tomatoes are doing pretty good this yr, the drought conditions we have had put a bit of a damper on the yield but it was still good and better than i have had previous yrs. this season i grew all heirlooms. for sauce and canners i grew amish paste and opalka. i also grew some mortgage lifters and ox hearts and for the smaller varietys i grew sugar lumps and reisntraube (sp). i'm still harvesting the canning/paste varietys and some of the small varietys. almost to the point where i'm getting sick of it.

Yes, here too. We're getting enough to eat, but we won't be canning any or making any juice. They simply are not producing as they should. Normally we would be canning right now and maybe even giving them away.

Temperatures here have consistently been 5-10 degrees below normal (except for a couple 3 day stretches of 92+). Nothing getting ripe except for a few cherry tomatoes- about enough for my daily salad. Bah.

We planted Better Boys and Celebrities on our place north of Atlanta. We put a lot in the freezer and gave away plenty. It was dry so we watered several times and mulched heavily with leaves. As of today no more tomatoes.

We had enough to eat and the drought really hurt the harvest. Still getting a few and still have some green ones on the vines. I've taken down my cages made from heavy reinforcement wire on 12 or 14 of the plants and pulled the plants. Next year may be better. I had 6 or 7 varieties planted. Hal

Yes we have them. All from a 4'x12' Raised bed box. Just took these pics. The little lady has been canning and freezing vegies for the last month. We are all set for the comming year and still harvesting and preserving. We are selling excess prouduce now on a roadside stand. We are adding to our Electrical production capabilities this fall, with a goal of Net Zero within two years. (food and electrical, and heat production) Still need gas for cars, saws, tractors etc.
PS The squash cross polinated . we have 9 of them. We know what they are. Do You?

Wife canned 48 quarts of stewed tomatoes last week on the first picking. Another picking due now. We ran out of canned tomatoes a while back. Wife bought a can or two from the grocery - they were BAD. Had a serving fom a quart that failed to seal tonite. Delicious!

My poor tomatoes are almost completely dead already from late blight. It looked like I still might get enough to freeze a couple of dozen quarts, but today it looks like they're rotting on the vine faster than they ripen. Worst year for tomatoes here (SE MN) in my lifetime. It was one of the hottest, humidest, and wettest summers on the books, which made every fungi's dream come true. Peppers were hit early, but they seemed to have recover now and may still produce OK, too bad I can't freeze salsa without tomatoes though :(

our tomatoes were so so the plum tomatoes did pretty good ., but it was sos hot and I was working a lot so I have to admit Iwas to lazy to make salsa or can any of them . My wife took some to work and the rest went to the people at the nursing home where my mom is. Last week she sat on the front porch and handed vegies and tomatoes to all the people that help take care of her. It cheered her up as she told them recipes how to cook the squash

That there is a cushaw. I haven't had any of it since I was a kid back in KY. We had a neighbor who kept the whole community supplied with them. Good times.
Good Luck and God Bless
