Hard Starting International

My International 1600 Grain truck has been hard starting, or will not start when warm lately. It has the 345. I have replaced the points, and replaced the brake booster which was leaking back. I am now somewhat stumped, was thinking it may be a coil. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, Erik

For starters, you first need to determine if it is an electrical issue or carburetion related.Remove the air cleaner and operate the accelerator to see if the accelerator pump is pumping gasoline. Look down in the barrels of the carb to see if any gasoline is being pumped into the carb. Those Holley carbs can be a bit-h.Might be leaking off when the truck sets for awhile.

I will clarify a little, the truck starts fine when cold, it is when it is when restarting after hauling a load that it is hard starting or will not start. ie: if shut off in the elevator line it will not start.

My old International acted the same way till I had the starter rebuilt and replaced the battery. Seemed to turn over alright, but the extra load while the hot engine seemed to rob the ignition of enough battery power to let it start... Gene

I had a Dodge flathead six that did that. What a pita. Never did figure it out. Maybe the fuel line gets vapour lock from getting too hot.Wrap tinfoil around the fuel line where it gets close to the hot motor.

Erik, may not be the problem but easy to check. When it does not start take a jumper wire( alligator clips and long enough wire) to go from coil hot side to pos battery post. Our IH used to do this. Something about too much resistance through starting circuit to provide the coil enough voltage. Just a thought

You may want to check the battery voltage at the coil when a helper try's to make a start. The voltage may be too low when cranking for your ignition. Hal

I also hed a Dodge 440 with headers, and wouldn't start back up after a work out. Had the starter rebuilt and bought heat shield to wrap it in.

Check your ignition timing and point dwell. The two are interrelated. If you change one the other has to be checked too. Also check your timing advance mechanism in the distributor. My C65 with 366 and holley carb doesn't like to restart hot either. The only way to start it is hold the throttle to the floor while cranking, works every time.

Yep, starts and runs like a champ when it is cold. The porblem only occurs when trying to restart it when it is hot and doesnt happen every time.

Sounds like vapor lock in the gas line wrap it with aluminum foil over top the engine or many remedies seem to work but I"m not sure about the old clothespin one. We had an old 345 loadstar that did the same thing so I carried a sponge in the truck and dipped it in my Igloo ice chest and dapped it on the gas line and it seemed to work believe it or not.
