We went to North Germany a week or so ago to pick up our new puppy. We went to the beach which should be sea level GorT a couple feet right?
We live 300 or so miles South at 267 meters. The trip back home was almost constantly downhill. Wife asked why and I told her "up North/down South". She was happy. I got a little worried about her and thought I'd better give her a real explanation but couldn't come up with one.

Easily explained to her, there has to be a mean sea level, and a benchmark (survey datum) of a certain elevation, in NYC they reference 2 one is in NJ, Sandy Hook datum and Manhattan datum, from there you're either above or below that elevation. The top of our property here is about 650 feet above sea level.

You look at a map and up will always be toward the north pole of the earth and down will always be as the south pole. Up is to Santa.

Though the trip back home might have appeared downhill, 267m above sea level is uphill.

In a recent discussion, some of my Physics students believe that the Nile river flows uphill. "Isn't North up?"

For a little fun----I actually rode my Goldwing motorcycle below sea level while on vacation in 1990.

How you ask? Via the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel which takes you under water via the tunnel so cargo sea shipping can continue above without interrupting shipping flow. Two tunnels, one for each direction of ship traffic.

Kind of an eerie thought when you start thinking about all of the water pressure and if the tunnel should spring a leak or an accident would take place.
Tunnel and ship shot here.

Did quite a bit of coasting and had to use the brake a little in a couple of congested areas.

Did an under water tunnel also. Not one of my favorite places to be.

Beanman,
The two tunnels are not for one-way ship traffic.
The north tunnel is for ship traffic in the Baltimore Channel and the south tunnel is for ship traffic in the Hampton-Roads Channel leading into Norfolk and Virginia ports. Both channels have two-way ship traffic.

The project was originally envisioned as a bridge for the entire crossing with two high clearance sections for ship traffic to pass under. The Navy objected because the two high bridges could be dropped by bombing and Navy ships in Norfolk and Little Creek would not be able to get out to sea.
