I am trying to get an older oliver 88 running. its a gas, we put a new iginition switch on it, and turned it over had spark. Changed solenoind and no spark. I have 12 volts on both sides of coil and at the points but no spark. filed points no help. where do i test from here?

If you have 12 volts at the points with the points closed you have found the problem.Study a basic ignition circuit BEFORE you try to repair it.

12 volts and + ground?? Does it have an alternator or a generator?? If it has an alternator then I'll bet your ground is also your problem and the alternator is shorted out and robbing you of power.
That said with the cap off and the ignition on and the points closed open and close the point by hand. Do you get a spark at the points?? If no then your points need cleaned or replace if yes then you spark is getting lost in the cap/rotor area

(quoted from post at 22:45:08 08/22/10) Very few systems use positive ground 12v.
hat is just not true. All 12 volt John Deere tractors, including 24 volt diesels, which were made from1948 to 1969 when the company went to alternators were positive ground.

Assuming the distributor side of the coil (not high voltage, the wire going to the points and condenser) has 12v except when the points are closed, it may be that the ignition bypass wire (from the solenoid to the coil, bypassing the resistor (if it has one) is not connected correctly.

solenoid was not staying fully closed wasnt spinning it fast enough so changed it fixed the slow starter speed

(quoted from post at 19:39:44 08/22/10) It has a generator. the points have been cleaned and just pass current no spark

Having 12 volts at the points when they are open is normal. When they are closed they voltage should drop to zero. If the movable arm stays at 12 volts your are either not making good contact across the contact surface of the stationary side is not grounded. Trace the circuit with your volt meter. Where the voltage changes is where you look for your problem.
