Mower sickles. Bolts vs rivets. Serrated vs Non-serrated

I have to replace all of section on a 5 ft mower sickle where the sections are riveted.

Can I use bolts instead of the rivets for the sections?

The guards on the mower bar don't have the serrated ledgers. Do I have to use the serrated sections?

Thanks

Bolts are fine. You may need new 'hold downs' that allow clearance for the nuts - old hold-downs typically don't.

For grass hay I have best luck with smooth ledger plates & under-sarrated blades. Depending on what you cut, other combinations can work.

The new knife that we bought for "Nelson", a 7ft JD 350 sickle mower, came with nuts and bolts.

Did have to buy 5 aftermarket high arch knife hold downs.

The two yellow OEM knife hold downs worked with no problems.

The guards on the JD 350's are smooth; the sections on this knife are bottom serrated.

Be sure to install a section-and-a-half on the end.

Built a knife for our JD 39N with smooth sections and rivets; guards had serrated ledger plates.

Hope this helps.

For smooth guards
you shoud use serrated sections.

Serrated sections typically self sharpen. Smooth sections have to be sharpened every day to maintain cutting performance. Rivets verses bolts is mainly personal preference. Bolts are stronger and much easier to change sections tho.

I like serrated sections and rivets but use bolts to replace a section while the blade is in the mower. Also if you put the nuts on the bottom you don't have to change the hold downs

I use under serrated sections, ledger plates have edge sirrations. Cut a lot of coarse grass hay.
Never trusted bolts, but got a new knife bar with bolted sections. Has worked OK. Need to get high rise hold-downs however.

I can't believe you are running that without a pto shield. Are you nuts? Especially on a tractor you have to mount from the rear. I thought you were smarter then that. "but I always stop the pto before dismounting" were the last words they heard him say.

Right now "Nelson" the JD 350 sickle mower is a backup mower and is not mounted on a tractor, just sitting on a wooden pallet underneath the hay shed.

Same for the 39N; not mounted on a tractor at this time.

Neither one can do me any harm unless they accidentally fall over on me.

Thanks for your concern for my safety.

I agree with you 100% on stopping the PTO before dismounting the tractor.

Thanks for the replies.

I will switch over to bolts and serrated sections as the mower will be used for cutting broomgrass in ditches.

James H. pictures explained alot on the use of double knife on end of the knife.

James. I know there was a "1/2 guard" at the very end on those old mowers. If you don't have it it's pretty easy to cut a double down and grind to fit. May also have to grind a little ont the existing last double guard there.

Been really lucky on the "outer" end of the cutter bar.

Haven't had to make any "alterations" to guards, wear plates, knife hold-down clips, or sections.

Had to "alter" a non-clog guard ordered from Ag Power ( Deere ) on the "inner" end of the cutter bar; one side was too long and would not fit.

Sorry I don't have these photos available on Photobucket to display.
