OT -- Fence staining

greetings folks --- looking for good advice on best way and cost-effective stain product to use for my 4-board oak pasture fencing for one of my fields. Its only about 12-acres, but was looking for ideas on best (not most expensive) black stain and easiest application method. I built the fence myself couple years ago and would like to keep it in decent condition. thanks

Nice mix of used motor oil and diesel fuel accidentally spilled and brushed off isss cheap, easy, and prolly the best thing you can get.

Link is what I have had the best success with. Find a couple of kids and offer to pay ~$0.50 a linear foot of fence (both sides) and provide the materials/brushes/drinks/snacks to brush it on. Seems like it is always too windy to spray around here. If the kids are motivated they can do about 600" a day as long as fences are clear. The asphalt paints are quite a bit of work to brush on, makes my shoulder sore thinking about it. Useless painters from South Carolina want $1.00 a linear foot to spray thin stuff on that won"t last 3 months.

YMMV,

I use used oil and diesel fuel mixed half and
half on my treated truck floor. If you use some old black diesel tractor oil it will get pretty dark colored but not black. Put it on very generous and it should last awhile. Put another coat on it next year and then you may be good for awhile.

I've used both water base and oil base. No comparison for lasting. Go with the oil/solvent base.
Round here they spray it on, spray rig is on a truck that drives along the fence, one guy on each side of the fence with a long hose. It is a bit of an art and a very dirty job. Be sure a new fence has dried for several months and the wood is very dry, no rain in a week or more.

Lots of fence painters here in KY bluegrass area. I tried the "do it yourelf" method once. Never again.

TSC sells a black horse fence paint. Some kind of asphalt substance. I mix about 1/3 used motor oil with it. Ylu will need second coat after about 6 months.

TWP (Total Wood Preservative) is an excellent product! It comes in different colors, and can be applied with a cheap, pump up garden sprayer. It will ruin the orings in the sprayer, so I just toss it when I am done applying the stain. Greg
