White Mountain Ice Cream maker

So, about 6 years ago, I bought a new-old fangled, hand crank Ice cream freezers at my local hardware store, like we had when I was a kid. I made one batch of ice cream and the gear mechanism started to bind up, and quit working. Got busy and didn't get a new one before the warranty ran out. Finally bought one online about three years ago, and it worked like a charm. I figure I've made 20 batches of ice cream in that length of time.
Made a some last night, and before it was all done, the dang gear mechanism was binding up so bad I couldn't hardly turn it. Leaves a pretty good pile of metal shavings on the top of the canister, and some in the mix.
Has anyone else run into this problem? What does a fella do about it? I can't hardly justify spending $60 an a new head every few years to keep making ice cream. Figured I'd call the mfg (Rival) this week and see if they'll do anything for me, but I'm betting they tell me I'm out of luck...

What's a guy do???

Ben

They are made in China. Like all the other junk from there it is designed as a one time use product.

Use it once, throw it away.

That is exactly what I thought. But this morning in the daylight, I looked at the thing.
Very clearly cast into the bottom of the housing it says Made in the USA.

After Rival bought White Mountain the quality of White Mountain was gone.

When you find a real White Mountain, older, they will last a long time. E-bay is a good place to get one.

And, a little grease on the gears and around the square drive will help a lot. Take the two screws out of the top and give it some help.

I was looking for a new one a couple weeks ago and was interested in the white mountain. The reviews that I read on it were terrible as far as the gears go. Many, Many people had problems with them. They cost too much for me to take a chance so I just bought another cheap one.

Finally, as recently as 3 or 4 years ago, Jarden Corp. (Coleman, Ball, etc.) bought out Rival and began manufacturing White Mountain Freezers in China. Not coincidentally, this is when complaints about the ice cream maker started to surface.

Mine lasted ten batches before locking up. Gears were worn out. They are junk. I am going to machine new gears out of steel.
Might get set up and make a bunch.

Our local threshing show has three hand crank 5 gallon White mountain freezers that they use during the show and at an occasional social event. They take the cranks off and run them with either a gas engine, the rear wheel of a pickup or electric motor depending on the location. JT might correct me on the age factor but I think the current ones are in the 5-7 year-old range and during the course of a summer they make at least 350 gallons maybe more. Nothing lasts forever,or course, but these freezers are about as dependable as they come. Too bad the chinese got hold of them. Jim

Thanks for the link.
But Whadya spose they're selling the same cruddy gears that wear out after a few uses??? Still thinkin I oughta find a vintage one...

Have any good recepies to share?

I have looked at the white mountian ones and think they are nice. Now that you say the gears don't last I wonder. The wife bought a small freeze the bowl type Cusinart I think. Its simple to use but some days a 6qt would be nice.

I think the old ones are the good ones. I'd guess in order to stay price-competitive they cut their quality. Will hurt them in the long run though. I wonder if there are any other good ice cream makers on the market???

I don't know if the drive head will fit a White Mountain you could call and ask they sell both.

My paternal grandmother's family recipe:
2 pints cream (I like the extra-heavy old fashion full fat kind)
2 pints whole milk
2 1/2 cups sugar
juice of 4 lemmons
Juice of 2 oranges
finely grated peel of one of the oranges.

Mix em all together and run em through a GOOD handcrank icecream freezer. Makes 4 quarts.

TRY TO AVOID EATING IT ALL IN ONE SITTING. I DARE YA!!!

I always thought White Mountain was the best. Didn't know they got bought out and it is China junk now. What brand would your recommend now?
