I recently bought a1949/1950 B John deere with a 6v system. The charging sytem does'nt work. The fellow I bought the tractor from replaced the voltage regulator but I don't think he had it wired correctly. He unhooked the wire coming from the amp gauge to regulator after the wire and amp gauge burn't up . Sq I would like to find out the correct wiring before I replace more parts.Maybe invest in a 12v Alternator conversion. Thanks, Sam

Generator/Regulator would wire as follows:
F (Field) on Regulator to F on Generator

A (Armature) or G (Generator) on regulator to A on Generator (May be on underside of regulator)

BAT on Regulator to Ammeter

If it has L (Load)on regulator it goes to ignition/light switches input. If no L, the switch input goes to the generator side of the ammeter

Heres a late A wiring diagram that used a Voltage Regulator, the older units used a Cutout Relay:

Heres a URL Link to my Troubleshooting Procedure for non charging:

That ought to give you something to work at for a while
