Need you help. My neighbor just purchased a Powere King tractor in perfect condition. One problem the engine/tractor vibrates even when you give it the gas. It has a Kohler twin 17 model # KT17QS engine

Before we start taking things apart was wondering if anyone had this problem and what did you do

Thank You
John

Does it have a driveshaft from the engine to the transmission? If so the u-joints wear out and will vibrate.

Thank You for the reply

That is what we were thinking. the drive shaft look good but I guess we will have to take it down to make sure

thanks again

John

the motor has balance shafts built in hope someone hasn't taken it apart and gotten it a tooth of

Hope it is not a broken rod..
The early Kohler 17 had no forced-oiling..
The "Series II" engine does have an oil pump. which is what I put in the Bolens..we have 3..one with a Big-Bore Onan from a small Bob-Cat..!!

After we lost one rod, they told us to always run every non-pressurized engine 1/4" over full..never lost another one since..
It did vibrate with the broken rod, but did not make any noises..except that, that piston was not moving..!
I just don't remember seeing any counter-shaft in that engine..

Ron..

NO balance shafts in that particular engine.

It's a horizontally-opposed twin and doesn't need them.

"The early Kohler 17 had no forced-oiling."

Actually it DOES... the MAIN bearings and cam bearings are pressure oiled. However, the ROD bearings are splash-oiled.

"The "Series II" engine does have an oil pump."

So does the original series.

"I just don't remember seeing any counter-shaft in that engine."

Pretty tough to see something that isn't there!

Take the driveshaft off to rule out driveline vibration.

If it STILL vibrates, likely you've "lost" a piston/rod or some magnets are missing off of the inside of the flywheel.

Even if it is a "Series 2" engine they haven't exactly been setting the world on fire with their reliability either. Granted those engines are pretty old but I've seen several "82" series cub cadets with the KT17 series 2 needing engines - all have thrown one rod - just like the "Series 1".
