Kubota ZB600c 2 cyl. diesel.

I just got a Kubota ZB600c-1 2 cylinder diesel. The thing hasn't run in probably 10 years but does turn over. My question is, does anybody know of where I can get an owner’s manual for it or does someone have an electronic copy they could send me? Also I tried starting it and I couldn't get any fuel, could the injection pump have fuel inside that has gelled? What would you recommend? It came off a reefer unit and I have a slightly modified Gibson Model D that I am going to put it on.

Thanks for any help,
Justin

If it has an electric shut off solenoid, make sure it snaps closed when the key is turned on,or temporarily wire it back so it sets the rack. The rack could be stuck since it has set for so long. That engine also uses glow plugs to assist in starting, and they will have to be made operational before the engine will start.

My problem is it isn't pulling any fuel from the can up. I always thought that diesel injection pumps could pull fuel from the source without an external pump, is that correct? Also I am fairly mechically inclined-but with gas motors, could you explain a rack, and what exactly it does? The glow plugs are functioning, it is just the fuel issue.
Thanks,
Justin

I own 4 ZB600's. We use them as "pony" engines on our herbicide applicator trucks. The manuals are still available from Kubota. Sometimes you can find them on Ebay. I keep ZB600 in my automatic searches.

The ZB600 needs an external fuel pump. I don't know about the internal workings of the fuel injection system.

They have been pretty good engines. We like them because they don't take up a lot of room under the truck deck.

The integral radiators are a sore spot. we used to have to replace radiators all the time, so we put on an external radiator. Yours may not be set up that way.

Kubota no longer makes the ZB600 for sales in the US. I was told that emissions requirements caused them to be dropped. Parts are still readily available.

Thanks! I will try an external pump and I bet she fires. Do you have to do anything special or just operate the throttle, glow plugs and starter? I am still fairly new to diesels, do you hold the glow plugs on while your cranking or just before you crank?

Thanks,
Justin

If it came off of a refer, it had an electric fuel pump to push fuel up from the tank. May have to go with an electric pump that will hold about 10-15#.

The glow plugs are vital to getting the ZB600 to crank. Operate them about 15 seconds and then try to crank. It should puff some white smoke if it is getting fuel. No white smoke-no fuel. If you leave the glow plugs glowing too long they will burn out. You can check them with a test light or ohm meter. There should be resistance, not sure how much. there should also be a device in line with the glow plugs to keep them from burning out. It looks like a little coil and it will glow red when you activate the glow plugs.
