Spark plugs for LP engine

Have an Oliver 770 LP and wanting to change the plugs and wires. NAPA book says the tractor calls for Champion D21 plugs, the tractor currently has D14 plugs in it. Which plugs should I get, does propane make a differance? Also, NAPA wants to sell me a "premium" universal wire set but I don't think $22 bucks is needed to be spent when I've seen cheaper sets on their website.
 
What dot the old plugs look like? Generally you need to go a couple of heat ranges colder when running propane. If the D14 are running clean you could stay with that heat range. Otherwise, if D21s are what is called for when used with gasoline, you could try D16s or D18s.

The premium wire sets are probably some type of carbon fiber. A good choice if you are concerned about electrical interference with a radio or other electronics. Not likely to apply to you. In most cases the best wires for your tractor will be copper wire core. They will also most likely be the cheapest.
 
I believe on LP engines the sparkplug gap is considerably closer than on conventional gas engines.
 
The engine has 5500hrs and think could use a ring job at least. Besides just a touch of oil, the plugs don't look bad. Could probably clean them up, put them back in and see how long they stay clean.

This tractor will not have anything on it that would cause interference so I agree and think the cheaper copper core wire will work best. Just kind of suprised they want to sell me $22 plug wires for such a simple engine.

It takes more voltage to fire across the gap in a LP fuel mixture than a gasoline fuel mixture. That is why the gap is usually narrower. The problem with the old tractors is that they probably only have about a .025 gap to start with so you can't narrow them up much and still have a wide enough gap to get a good spark to start the ignition. About the best you can do is to use low resistance plugs and wires to obtain the best spark available.
