Job application question

I applied for many jobs in the last 14 months and one thing that is common on all applications is the questionaire asking age gender, ethnic. Under ethnic, the first question is always , are you Hispanic or Latino? Do the Hispanic or Latino's get special preference over other ethnics?

Supposedly not, but it amazes me that so many Federal Govt and mortgage loan documents asks the same questions. Why is this pertinent information at all? Are we not all equal under the law?

Hello ILLEFTY,
Two thinks that you are not supposed to be asked in a job application or interview:
1 Is your marital status.
2 You age.
Guido.

The reason those questions are on application is that companies must file reports with the government that requires them to show that they are not discriminating against any race, male/female or veterans when hiring.
When companies send in their reports they are compared to what the government shows as the local population. That population is one of the uses of the census that was just taken.

Anyone other than a white male gets preference in hiring. Fair? I dunno. True? Very much so.

Companies are supposed to show "good faith" efforts to hire minorities. That is, if they have a white male applicant and a minority applicant who are equally qualified they're supposed to hire the minority. The only way they can prove that is to ask the race of all applicants. You are not required to answer the question, however.
