Can't start tractor

I am having trouble starting my tractor. I have replaced the solenoid and both battery cables. I was having trouble getting the starter to turn over, but it would crank after a time.
Barring a defective starter, how can I get it to start the simplest way? I replaced the wire from the starter button to the solenoid and also put a jumper between the 2 female connectors for the keyed ignition to rule out a defective ignition switch. If I want to bypass the oil pressure and amp gages, where do I route the yellow wire which comes from the solenoid connection mated to the battery cable feed? Also, are there any other switches which need to be considered?

LOL but he problem is your have what one of maybe 1000 tractors and the fix for them is again i in a 1000 so if you want help fill in the blanks so we can in fact help you help your self. We need to know what you have 6 or 12 volts mag or distributor etc. etc. Sorry we can not read your mind and we do not have a crystal ball

I think we need a tractor model. If your starter won't turn it over, use the crank... Oops, probably doesn't have one since you said "keyed" ignition. Give us a little more to work with. Yesterdays Tractor folks like mysteries, but that's a tuff one!

It is an 8N, gas. It was starting and turning over up until yesterday, but sometimes there were several seconds when it would not turn over, but then would all of a sudden would.

In my opinion the condition you describe is the result of a poor connection. When the poor connection finally heats up it makes better contact thus the starting attempt.

Have you cleaned the batter cables and terminals? Oxidized terminals cause many a failure.

Ok, I'm confused as to the difference between what you call"turning over" and "cranking".
1. Does the starter spin when you hit the start button?
2. Does the starter engage with the ring gear in the engine?
3. Does the engine turn when you hit the start button?
4. Does the engine turn and not fire?
5. Does the solenoid click?
6. If/when it does click, do you get 6 volts on the wire going to the starter?

Well since I slept since I read your first post I will assume it turns over. Check for spark first it needs to be a nice blue/white spark and jump a 1/4 inch gap. Then check that you have fuel from the drain plug in the bottom of the carb. If your lacking ether one work back to find where you loose either one

Ok now that I have reread it all I can help more. Unhook the battery cable from the soliniod, make 100% sure it is OUT OF GEAR. put that cable on the starter stud. If it turns over then you have a bad soliniod if not then you have a problem with either the battery or a cable/connection. If it does not turn over use a set of jumper cable and try that again with another battery 6 or 12 volts. Hook right to the starter. If it still does not turn over you have a bad starter

Have you load tested the battery?
A spark does not necessarily mean the battery will handle a load.
Check all connections between the battery and starter.

take it off and take it apart and check the brushes not hard to replace them clean up every thing good for a go.

All connections are good. The starter did not turn over when connnected directly to the battery. I removed the starter, and am wondering about replacing the brushes. Looks like there are 4, and I should be able to get them at the Ford Tractor Shop.

Can you clarify on replacing the brushes, and how do I go about, as you said, "clean up everything"? What do you use to clean?

By the way, many thanks for all of this help. I think I am getting close, and I want to get on with using the tractor.

Are you having trouble kicking it over after you replaced the cables? I would put the battery on the charger before replacing the whole electrical system.

If your going to do the brushes also do the bushings at the same time. The 2 most common problems in a starter are the brushes and the bushings either one or both will stop one from working and if the bushings get bad enough they can cause the armature to go bad from rubbing
