I need to replace the carpet floor lining in an older car.

Could a person just trim a piece of new carpet to the exact shape of the old one and get it fit down in the contours??

Or is a vehicle carpet liner molded to make it lay down properly?? Would regular carpet backing work for the sound deadening/insulation layer??

Thanks for any tips,
Howard

If it has a big hump I would say no. However you might be able to beat the carpet down enough. Carpet is a rather poor sound deadener.

If you want it to look decent, spring for a molded carpet for that model. You can probably buy the under mat cheaper than cutting carpet padding (if you pay yourself) but should work just as good. I tried to carpet an old car with the rolls that walmart sold when I was a kid. Lost major cool points.........

There is 6'wide carpeting that doesn't have a backing. Looks sort of like really thick fuzzy felt. If you hit it it'll dent. Good luck trying find it though. Sound barriors don't work very well. Plug all the holes.

Many years ago I installed some indoor/outdoor carpeting in a 1964 Pontiac. I ended up with some wrinkles and buckles where the center hump met the front of the floor, but a few strategically placed sheet metal screws with flat washers took care of most of those wrinkles. It was a poor mans fix, but it worked.

An option might be a salvage yard car if it is a common older model. I made an honest attempt at what you decribe when I was 16 or so. The regular carpet that I used didnt work so well despite my time and expense.
Thanks for bringing back memories of my Green 75 Pinto!!

(quoted from post at 06:47:51 06/08/10) Thanks for bringing back memories of my Green 75 Pinto!!
Green 75 maverick with beige interior and I was trying to cover beige carpet that had been glued in. Was the carpet of the late '70's that had colored specs that looked like someone had mash tators & gravy with jelly beans for desert before driving across the pasture real fast.........

Did it look similar to this 1975 Mercury Bobcat?
This had the V6 engine. Our daughter had 3 of those Pintos and my wife had several. Hal

Yes it did! My folks had a Bobcat wagon for years. My 75 Pinto was bought in 82 or so with a bad engine. Dad helped me buy the 140 CI (2.3 L) crate engine and that was my first engine swap. I had that car for a long time. We had a pit in the garage on the farm that I miss to this day. The engine out of that car ended up in a 80 Mustang and went 5 more years !

I appreciate everyone"s comments! I"ll just order a "real" liner...

It"s a good car - but mice got into it and I can"t get the smell out... Or at least I keep thinking I can still smell "mouse"... ha...

My main thought was not so much cost saving as much as I"d be able to just pick out more exactly what color & quality I wanted from a local carpet place and not get stuck with some cheap looking, thin material from some online mail order place...

Thanks,
Howard

If it's not ate up, give it a good dousing with baking soda and vacuum it after a day or so. Also try a neutralizer for shunk/pet odors.
